Nuts...

I posted this on the Main Board a few weeks ago.  Thought we could get a thread going about nuts.  Also the guy mentioned that if you are eating more nuts you need to cut down on your use of oils...salad dressings and such.

Went to the local support group this evening...We had the hospital nutritionist as the guest speaker.  We had talked before, going through my surgery.  I e-mailed him yesterday and asked him about nuts...how much we should have and which nuts to avoid.  He spoke this evening on the subject.  Thought I would share a couple of the highlights (we know most of these things already).
He said try and limit the amount of nuts you consume throughout the day.  Nuts have great nutritional value but are high in oils and fats.  He recommended almonds and walnuts the most.  He said to try and avoid any nuts that have more than 2 grams of saturated fats per oz.  Below is the list of nuts he gave me...I'll add the fat and saturated fat tables to it.  Brian

Nut                   Fat                   Saturated Fat
Pistachios           13                    1.5
Almonds             15                    1
Cashews             13                    3
Macadamias       22                    3.5
Peanuts              14                    2
Pecans               21                    2
Walnuts             19                    1.5
Pumpkin             21                    2
Brazil nuts         18                    4
Pine Nuts           19                    1.5
Sunflower Seed 14                    1.5

Good to know.  I've had a couple of the convenience store 99c sleeves of nuts when it seemed to be the best choice in the store for a snack, and I've done either cashews or almonds.  I can easily stick with almonds when the need arises.  We buy almonds by the 3# bag at Sams Club; my wife takes a portion to school every day as part of her lunch.  I haven't been in the bag save once since surgery.  Nuts haven't irritated my pouch at all, which surprises me, but I won't overdo them because of the high fat/caloric content.

I told my Doc I was snacking on almonds and he said stop due to the fat.  Then I went to Pistachios.  The problem now is Its like eating crabs, you have to pick and pick and before you know half the basket or bag is gone.  I got better, I buy the tubes now.
Good post

I like to eat peanuts or pistachios when traveling for the same reasons you mentioned. Quite often they're the only acceptable snack to be found in a convenience store. Other than jerky and I'd rather be hungry than work my jaw down to the nubbin trying to chew on jerky. But I can't afford to keep them around the house. They're way to addicting for me, and it is shocking the calorie density. A whole lot of calories for very little volume.

I have a handful of roasted almonds at least once a day for a snack.
