Two years out and holding
Hi, guys. Been two years since my RNY bypass. I lost nearly 200 pounds and have held it off since October.
My health is excellent. I walk, bike, swim hike, exercise in the gym. BP, cholesterol, etc., all low and healthy.
The irony is that during a physical, my doc found a heart murmur. So, an EKG, then an echo, and finally a heart cath, which determined an aortic valve narrowing.
But with all my arteries clear and the heart function within normal, volume wise, no valve replacement surgery. Doc says it could be a year, 10 years or never. Just six month interval echos to see how things go.
Actually, my surgeon noticed the murmur back when I was nearly 400 pounds. A year later, my GP couldn't hear it; but this past March, he did.
One thing I learned for sure: Had I not had the RNY, chances are very good I would have been dead long before now.
You know what, though? Even two years out, I still find myself instinctively avoiding mirrors, and subconsciously moving aside for people -- as if I was still a wide load. I have to consciously remind myself that I'm now "normal" size.
To all of you considering WLS, going through the approval process, sweating a surgery date, or in the throes of recovery -- keep the faith. It is well worth it.
Life is worth it.

Thanks remims.. I agree. It's more than worth all the earlier hassle. Thanks for the update.
