I am 5 days post op RNY and things are going pretty well. Anyone have any experience with taking ED medication post op? I plan on talking to my doctor next week, but just like to get others perspectives.

  1. Welcome to the Men's Board.
  2. Depending on why you are taking the ED meds, for example counter the side effect of HBP meds, you may find as you lose weight and don't need the HBP meds any more you won't need the ED meds either.

Around these parts "ED" has two meanings. The first meaning is like you mean and the second is for "Explosive Diarrhea"!

OOPS, I haven't had any problems with Explosive diarrhea... at least on at this point. I realize after I sent it, my comment was pretty vague. Specifically, what I was asking is does anyone have any experience taking levitra early post surgery? Is there any reason to think it may pose a problem?

I have the Rx because of mild Erectile Dysfunction due to my blood pressure medication and type 2 diabetes. i am hoping the surgery will reverse the effects of those conditions. already off Insulin and had my metformin reduced. My blood sugars are averaging about 97 to 105 and hoping to be done with the Metformin at my next doctor visit. The still have me on losartan for BP, but i think that will be gong away soon too. I have my one week post op today and will ask my doctor. I haven't tried to have sex yet, still a little sore, but was asking more as a curiosity.

It was a good question. Little bit of time and you'll be off the other meds and you may not even need the ED med. Unless it is to make like the Energizer Bunny so you can keep on going, and going,.....

Be careful with taking the meds for ED. Your blood pressure will drop as the pounds come off. It may drop too low. The RNY should help with the diabetes and you may be off those meds over the next couple of weeks. Get ready for a wild ride with the weight loss. It will make your head spin!!

Also with the rapid weight loss your body (fat cells) will release both estrogen and testosterone. So (over time) you will feel stronger (help with ED). Also because of the estrogen, you may feel like you are falling apart emotionally! Guys who are stable, wonder what is happening to their emotions?? It is the estrogen...But it only will last a few months (during rapid weight loss). I would take an occasional ED med before my RNY...Over 10 years ago. Since then I haven't needed any. Just me...Your situation may be different. But give it time (and weight loss) and you'll know more in the next few months. Brian

Thanks Brian, your answer is precisely what I was thinking might be the case. I had several major goals when when I decided to undertake this path.

The first is diabetes control. Yes, one week post op and I am off insulin and have already had my metformin reduced. My blood sugar levels have never gone higher then 120 since surgery.

Second is of course significant Weight Loss, heck even one week post op I am down a full ten pounds from my last pre surgery weight... and that is not counting the 10 pounds of fluid weight I gained the few days in the hospital.

Third Goal was more general, but is just to get my body working better, whi*****ludes intimate function. Iv'e never struggled with lack of lebido, but for the last two years or so, my parts were just not as responsive as I had hoped. Where I never lost the ability to gain an erection, it was becoming more and more difficult to rely on "au naturel" (sorry a bit TMI).

And thank you for the explanation about the hormones. I know from reading many posts on another support page that the weeks and months post op can be very emotional and even depressing for some. I wasn't sure why, but what you said makes perfect sense. Also most of the stories I have seen are from women and I was wondering if men got the same hormonal dumps and the extreme emotions. so far nothing like this has effected my, but then again I am only one week out. Thankfully, I'll be heading into this time at the beginning of summer when emotional swings are always easier to deal with.

Thanks again for the great info. See you around. Marty
