 Dang!  Hope you get the bear at the hospital.  You're welcome to borrow mine.  It's kinda cool, actually.

Ok, so packing.  Less is best!

* Chapstick
* Your own pillow to sleep on if you're picky
* Deodarant
* Phone
* LIGHT reading material (magazines, no books) - my  mom used this more than I did
* MP3 Player (I had a book-on-tape loaded and some soothing music)
* Your surgery nutrition/instruction book.

Nothing else.  Don't bother with a robe, you'll have IV tubes everywhere and won't get your arm in a robe... just use the backwards gown they'll give you that has the snap sleeves.  Slippers are fine, but make sure they have rubber soles, but really the little slipper socks they give you are fine.  Don't pack extra clothes to wear home, just wear what you wore going in.  All the toiletries you'll need are provided (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap) so don't bother.  I didn't take a shower while in the hospital, so you don't need all that stuff... but I prefer my own deodarant.

Just remember that anything you pack, you'll have to unpack and put away when you get home.... and you certainly won't feel like doing that while you're recovering.

I agree with Pam.  Don't need to pack much.  But there were two things I'm SO glad I had.  One was headphones....you could plug them into the bed and listen to the TV and not disturb the other person in the room.  That helped me sleep.  I seemed to be awake in the middle of the night.  Go figure.  But the other thing I'm glad I had was a small table fan.  Oh wait, but I had surgery in August.  LOL!  In March, you may not need a fan.

I didn't have my Ipod then, so the "noise" from the TV helped me sleep.  Oh and when they had me shower, they took me to a room where they did the PT for the burn patients.  The whole room was a shower.  It was great.  I didn't have to shower in the little bathroom in the room.  I'm assuming they still keep bariatric patients in the burn unit?

 I agree with everything I've read, but what I'd add is a cell phone charger ( I ended up staying a few days longer than expected) and eye shields.  I'm a BIG wimp when it comes to noise and sound, so the eye shields helped!

Good luck,

The scheduling is kind of strange.  You had your PAT before me and your surgery after.  I was at my PAT with people having surgery Mid March.  One poor lady has started her liquid diet and hasn't had a NUT class.  I showed her my book so she could see the list of Liquids she can have in addition to what comes in the kit.

I also totally agree with the less is better packing. I've only been out 2 wks and mostly It was the noise from other rooms that bugged me. Yes RNY is with the burn patients& whatever else they send their way. I had somewho had come from emergency room with me 1 1/2 days who talked very loud and demanding and probably a very sweet man next doorwho never stopped talking plus 3 little kids who where in the burn unit who cried alot. You can't be mad for their crying as I know they were hurting but it is hard to sleep etc. I wish I had thought to bring and mp3 though!
I had my nut class in mid Dec as was originally scheduled for early  Jan surgery. I did get the bear pillow and bag also. The bear is definetly unique, wide and hard. I never used it though the pillow was easier on my stomach. I wonder if  the New Year made the bear cut. I drive 1 1/2  hrs. to Hurley so that sounds like something I would do too. I will be anxious to hear how both of your surgeries go.
