"Stigma is not an effective motivator," said Rebecca Puhl, a Yale University psychologist who is a leading expert on weight discrimination. "Whether children or adults, if they are teased or stigmatized, they're much more likely to engage in unhealthy eating and avoidance of physical activity."

Whenever I was told I was fat, I just ate more.  I was depressed, how was I supposed to be motivated?  Or let alone exercise.  The only one that can motivate you is YOU.  Not Michele Obama, bullies, billboards or anyone....

IMHO is all...

Amid 'war on obesity,' skeptics warn of stigma

Welcome to the board Sheree!!!  Great to have you aboard!!!  I am sure you will find plenty of support here, just make take a while for some responses as we have lots of lurkers, myself included.  Glad to hear that you found a doctor that is willing to work with you.  That is alway a bonus on our mental state as we go through this process.

Where in the thumb are you at?  My hubby grew up in Bad Axe, although we now live down in Pinckney which is between Howell and Ann Arbor.  I drove to Flint for my surgery and for the first year of follow-up, but now I just see my PCP and they do all my labs for me.  Sometimes you can't find a PCP that is willing to do that though, I guess I got lucky.

Well, welcome again and good luck with your gallbladder surgery, I had that done myself a couple years before my GP surgery....  Keep us posted on how you are doing...

Hi, Pam.  First of all, as a brand new user of the website (just one week post-surgery) let me thank you for your positive and informative contributions to the messages I've had a chance to review so far.  A quick look at your blog reinforced this (I'll be back when I have some more time.) You rock!

I love the idea of a list of meetings.  Here are some that I came across (my surgery was through MMPC at Borgess Hospital in GR, but I live in Jackson.  I notice the last contact for each is the practice number but when attending the Grand Ledge meeting (the only one I have visited personally),  I didn't get the impression these were limited to patients in the practice I used.)  I also can't be sure everything is up to date, but it is the best I have.

Bath (NE of Lansing) - 1st Mon of each month at 6 pm.  Bath Township Senior Center at 14480 Webster Rd in Bath, MI 48808 -- contact Janice at 517-719-6361 or Teresa at 616-974-4400

Holland - 1st and 3rd Tuesday monthly at 6 pm at MMPC South at 890 S Washington Holland MI 49423 (at US-31 Exit 47B)  contacts are Karen 616-796-6274 or Teresa at 616-974-4400

Grand Ledge - last Monday monthly at 6 pm.  Liberty Church at 12745 Georgia Street in Grand Ledge MI 48837 (Grand Ledge Exit off I-96) -- Contacts Linda 517-627-5979 or Diane at 517-803-3326 or Teresa at 616-974-4400

Grand Rapids - 1st Monday monthly at 6:30 pm --- Kent Community Hospital on 750 Fuller Ave NE Grand Rapids MI 49503 (I-96 at the Fuller Rd Exit).  Contacts Kajean at 616-808-8099 or Teresa 616-794-4400

Good luck with this endeavor.  Keep us apprised of your progress.

I was wondering if anyone had their surgery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and if anyone had Dr. Chengelis.  What did you think about the program.  Thanks :)

Topic: RE: Anyone have VSG performed by Dr. Zeni?
Dr. Zeni did my RNY, spent extra time cleaning out old adhesions and checked on me when I was hospitalized for unrelated issues.  He also spent extra time explaining the process to my father and was very gracious to do it after hours of surgery.  RnY because that is what the insurance favored, and it is a faithful tool for me, by the way.

The rest of the Michigan Bariatric Institute is also amazing.  Their knowledge and willingness to share it are what has made me successful.   And they are fun!
