The nut i saw at the U  sayed i dont need to do any of the protein drinks or add any extra protein to stuff.    she also told me no snack just have 3 meals a day about a half a cup and drink lots of water.   well my problem with that is i only getting 30g of protien in a day.  i know that is not nearly enogh.

Anyone have any suggestion.

I hate seeing the nuts at the U  cause each time i see a new one.  each one tells me something different.  for pre-op  one told me to count calories,  keep under 1500.   than another told me to do low carb,  one told me to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day.    I just ended up doing low carb to lost my 20lbs.

I'm not sure what to tell you about this one, Amelia. Telling you NOT to add protein just sounds WRONG, because if you've had the RNY done, the problem here is that you don't absorb a whole lot.  Maybe you could check with the doctor's nurse and find out what the REAL program is?

Yup--it is important to drink LOTS of fluids so you don't dehydrate. Ask the few folks on this board what it's like to be deydrated--they ended up in the hospital getting fluids by IV. Apparently the side effects of drying out are not nice.

I really hope you get the story on what you're supposed to be doing, real soon!

Have a nice Sunday!

But you are only 4 weeks out. Her advice to you is probably right on for this stage. Looking at their handbook, it does seem to be their plan.

I also go to the U and they told me the same thing when I was where you are at. You are just starting pureed/soft I am guessing? Your protein will increase in time. I was worried just like you and my protein increased as I was able to add more foods. One thing one of the nuts suggested to me was to add powdered milk, has extra protein and calcium. I mostly add it to my CIB. I got the feeling that they were worried about the extra calories with the protein powder. I do stick to the 3 meals per day, no snacks. For me I am developing a good habit of not snacking between meals ~ one of my worst habits pre surgery! I do allow myself sf popsicles though, yum.

I know it gets confusing, everyone including nuts, nurses and docs have a different idea of what is the right thing to do. I have taken it all in and adjusted to what works best or me.

Hope that helps :)

Hi
I also go to the U. Have the same Dr. as you also.
I got a folder with a bunch of materials in it while I was in the hospital. In it was a handbook with all of the things you can eat ( I believe that was a flyer that came with the book) inside the booklet was exactly what they want you to be eating for the first few months. Stage by stage. liquids, pureed, soft foods then regular diet.  The nutritionist I spoke to said at this point, focus on your water intake, do your three meals a day ( they have sample menus for all stages in the booklet) and then to have the snack in between. I believe the snack example was the sugar free carnation instant breakfast. Once you move to the soft foods phase, they said it will be easier to get in the protein. For me, that will be 2 more weeks--looking forward to it.

If you are confused , I would really call and ask to speak to the Dr.'s nurse.  They have always been very helpful anytime I have had even the smallest concern.

Best wishes,
Natalie

My post- op has been a bad time for me.   2 day before surgery everything was a go for having at the campus but the day before they called and changed it to riverside.  I felt like i got sub-level care while i was there.   First night i was there i was awaken by my neighbors IV pole going off. so i press the call box.  a magic voice comes over a speaker "can i help you"  (in a tone that you are disrupting me) i told em about the iv pole.  half hour later mine starts beeping. SO i called em again  this time asked for some pain med,  one hour and half later someone finally shows up.  My favorite part was when it was time to go to radiology.  I am drug out of mine and just wanna sleep. they stick me in a wheelchair and i sit in the doorway of my room waiting for the "transporter" to arrive and take me to radiology.  20 min later they show up.

Right after surgery i ask the nurse, did they fix my hernia,  "sorry i haven't read Ur chart"
next day i asked  " sorry i am not sure what they did"  last day asked an intern doctor  he told me that they decide that it wasn't bad enough to fix.

Should also mention they tried putting me on anti-depressants  when i not longer take em.

The only time i say Dr. Ik  was pre-surgery.

On Friday i got a message  that my 1 mouth ( Thursday) appointment was bumped and i was to call back and make a new appointment.  When i call the lady i swear had no idea what was going on and said she have someone call me on Monday.

Don't get me wrong, i am just happy i had no complications and everything went well.  I am home and feeling great.   the doc did a great job!  it just everything that has happened just really peeves me and hearing i should have gotten a packet. adds to it.

Sorry for flaming.

I'm so sorry you had such a bad series of experiences. I also had surgery by Dr. Ikramuddin, and have to say, my care, both pre op and post op, was excellent. I think I must have 4 of those 'dietary guidelines' booklets by now! Once at my initial consultation, once at pre op teaching, once at pre op clinic visit, and again in the hospital.

My nursing care was wonderful-- but I recognize that experiences vary.

I would second the recommendations by other posters here, to contact Dr. I's nurse practioner directly.

While I know their program has changed somewhat from when I had my RNY done, my Dr and the nuts at HCMC do not recommend protein drinks at all. As quickly as it goes through your pouch, you get all the calories from it, but not nearly the protein you think, and we are supposed to avoid calorie containing beverages. (anything w/more than 15-20 calories) I was told that I'm not supposed to snack either (though I admit that I do) and after a certain amt of time has gone by, I was to be able to eat about 1 cup. I focus almost exclusively on my protein and then work on the other foods. I couldn't tell you how many grams of protein I get in a day, though I'm sure I'm below where I should be, but I'm healthy and my labs always look pretty good. I do pick food out for how much protein it has and how much iron. Maybe there's a protein bar out there that's not high in calories, but has a lot of protein?
