Hi
My friend and i have a consult with Dr. Buchwald at the U of M on Dec, 17 for the DS.  Can anyone give us the run down on where the best place to stay, as we are driving down from Ontario, a 6 hr drive, Also what should we expect at this consult.  Any advice or info would be very appreciated........Thanks.........Daphne

Daphne, can't help much with where to stay but there are lots of places to stay in the area. If you stay right near the hospital, it will likely cost you more. If you can do one of the burbs, it should be cheaper. The directions they have to the clinic are easy enough.

I had a consult with Dr. Leslie at U of M. If it's anything like that, you will sit though about a 30 minute presentation. Have your paperwork filled out before you go. Then you will have your vitals checked and weight recorded and then get some time with the surgeon. Then you will meet with a nutritionist.  None of it took very long. But Buchwald may be different.

Don't know much on where to stay but I was wondering if you could tell me how it goes with Dr B. I have actually never met him but I am considering meeting him about having him do my reverwsal of by RNY and having a lap band put on. I have alot of medical problems from the RNY and a few other dr's (ok 5) over the last 5 years have said to reverse it and now my surgeon says definitely reverse it and I was told he (dr B) is the way to go so I am wondering what he is like and such so anything you can share after y ou meet with him would be so great. Thansk and good lukc on your journey that is just beginning

Just an FYI, Dr B doesn't do the Lapband. so unless you have him do the reversal and then the lapband as a second surgery or do the reversal with a second surgeon in there to do the lapband - there could be a problem
good luck

There are several hotels right on campus that have reduced rates for U of M patients.  Go to http://www.fairview-university.fairview.org/YourVisit/Lodgin g/index.asp for detailed information on hotels, locations and rates.

There are several MN DSers that do not come on the MN forum because it is RNY and Lapband friendly.  If you would like more information on Dr Buchwald and the DS from his pateints come to the DS board.

Right next to the hospital there is a hotel.  I would just call Dr B's office and ask for recommendations on where to stay.  They will help you out.  However, if you need any help feel free to PM me at anytime.

I'm not a regular here.  Mainly because, I will admit, I haven't always felt terribly welcome.  I've posted questions and gotten very few responses early on - feels like it's hard to get 'in' here.  I HAVE gotten some helpful info via PM, but not many 'welcome' feeling responses on the board.  It also doesn't help that I really don't see much DSers on here - so many of my issues I have can't be answered here, nor can I answer many issues for other people.

I WOULD love to see more about the DS on this board, and more people suggesting it as an option - since we are so very lucky to have 2 experienced DS surgeons in our state . . . some people have to travel thousands of miles.  But I really don't see many here, for whatever reason.  I do check here, once in a while to see if there is something I can offer info on . . . but there so much I CAN'T address, being a DSer.
