Ultimate Test

This Saturday I am going to be faced with the ultimate test in avoiding sugar!  Its my family's annual Christmas cookie baking day.   I am going for the tradition but its going to be really hard since cookies were my pre-surgery weakness. Each year we make 1,000 dozen cookies (yes DOZEN).  Its this huge production my grandma has done for as long as I can remember. My family (which is very large) all meet at my at my aunt & uncle's home, who own an appliance recycling company, we have multiple ovens going and lots of people helping roll cookies. Its going to be so hard not to sample the cookies, any suggestions???

Wow, that is interesting. My family just did an exchange and we only exchanged 6 dozen and Lordy, we all thought that was plenty. I cannot imagine 1000 dozen! eeek

And that sounds "hot" - like with all those ovens going and such. Bring lots of water to sip on, that's my tip.

When the sampling starts, bust out your cheesesticks or beef sticks or something. Bring some ricotta fluff (PM me if you need a recipe). Bring LA Foster's pumpkin apple dip and apples - OMG is that good stuff! Pack a cooler, that's what I say. Only munch from the cooler and nothing else.

Ohhhh, that's like me being at a french fry festival!

I'm guessing that you are going to be smothered in compliments, given that you are about a year out. Bask in that glow. That can help to give you the strength to avoid putting cookies in your mouth. The compliments can help you remember why you had the surgery in the first place (well, I'm sure you had it for your health like the rest of us but you get the idea) and resist the cookies.

Diamond Girl had great ideas too. Do not let yourself get hungry and drink lots of water.

You can do this! Cookies, we don't need no stinkin' cookies!

All I could think of was - if you mass produce the cookies in some kind of line, make sure you're at the least appetizing station of all!  Like adding flour, or eggs, or maybe the shortening?  Stay away from the nearly complete dough, and for the love of everything holy, STAY AWAY FROM THE FINISHED PRODUCT!!!

Good luck, Kathy.  If you cave, slap your hand, then forgive yourself and move to a safer location.  One cookie won't send you back, nor does it make you a horrible person.  Just human.

Kathy - If you get in your head now that you're just plain not going to sample, I bet you can do it.  Great ideas from others on bringing stuff you can eat, and plenty of it so that the temptation isn't coming from actual stomach hunger.  You can SO do this!  If your aunt's house has a computer , come online and post if you need to get away for a few minutes.

I guess I have to suggest to make sure you eat at your normal times and bring your own food that you love. Drink lots of water.

Give yourself permission to have 1 of your favorites. You are part of the human race, and not perfect, so forgive yourself when you do have one!!!!

I agree!  Bring something with that you love! That way when temptation comes--you have something to satisfy yourself.
Good luck and have fun!
