RNY and birth control. Help!

I read today on the main board that after RNY, we do not absorb our birth control pills the same way and they may be ineffective.  Has anyone else been told this, especially by their ob-gyn?  This really worries me.

I had the lap band and after complications, I was revised to RNY 4 months ago and how RNY affects birth control pills is all new to me.  Can anyone shed some light?

I had read the same thing.  I used the pill for hormone purposes.  After surgery I found that I was not absorbing them.  Last month I chose to use the Nuva-ring.  Without going into too much personal info you could google it, but basically since it is inserted and not ingested you receive the meds without them going through the digestive system therefore no mal-absorbtion.

I chose the Mirena IUD.

Look into options other than the pill with your OB/GYN, or call your RNY surgeon's office and ask one of their nurses what their recommendation is.

I know that my daughter Laurie is using the nuva-ring and that is not causing her any problems. She had the VBG 7 years ago next month.

I went with Mirena IUD. Had my OB "place" it while I was under anesthesia for RNY.

Being a role model and becoming pregnant 6 months post-op, I would recommend that you have a serious discussion with your OB about other forms of birth control.  There are many options, as I'm sure that you know.  But your hormones get crazy, and you are going to be bypassing the part of your digestive system that absorbs the hormones from the pill.

My gyno recommended and inserted the Mirena IUD. last April  It is effective immediately and lasts five years. Fortunately, I've had no side effects, scant sporadic bleeding only during the fist three months....very pleased with it.  Who in their right mind would want to get preggers at 52  ....best to you as you weigh the options and make your decision!  Patti

Yikes, the photobucket avvie widened the pic!

I also have the Mirena IUD - actually I am on my third one!  The insertion and first 3-4 months sucks, but after that, no periods, no PMS - yeah!

I switched to the Nuvaring after talking to my doc about it because I was having issues with the pill. I am really happy with that.

Thanks everyone for replying.  I think I have narrowed it down to the nuvaring and the Depo shot.  I was on depo a few years ago for 10 years and loved it and had no problems with it.

My question about Nuvaring... can you feel it?  Can your partner feel it?  Is it hard to get out or does it ever pop out on it's own?

Thanks for the replies.
