What do you do instead?

So i'm sitting here on the airplane and doing what? Thinking about food of course. Boredom often triggers me to want to munch. Here's my question: When the cravings come, what do you do instead of eat? How do you distract yourself during those really tempting times? Me? Honestly... I sleep. That seems to be the only thing that works 100% of the time.

I think there must be a difference between cravings and hunger.  If there is something I'm craving, that just tells me what I'm about to have for my next meal.  For instance....I often crave garlic.  So now I'm planning a meal around garlic.  But I think that your question was more for the "other" cravings....such as perhaps chocolate?  If I'm hungry I might eat a small piece of chocolate.  I've really been trying to separate head hunger from real hunger.

If my mind is occupied head hunger doesn't get a fighting chance, but real hunger will always trump whatever I'm doing.  So for me the key is to stay busy.  For those times when I cannot stay busy, such as commuting on a bus or plane, that's when I'm like you...I try to sleep.

Learn to knit!  Cannot eat and knit at the same time!  Honestly, knitting is perfect for plane, car, train rides.  Of course, I often sleep on planes.  (one sign that you probably travel too much is if you can fall asleep, sitting upright, in coach, before the plane leaves the gate!)

I crochet sometimes to keep myself busy but I've run out of yarn and haven't replenished my stock in the last few months.  Lately I've been making tea (Mmmm Earl Grey) and filling a 32 ouch glass full of ice cubes and then pour the hot tea in there plus some more water until it's full.  I grew up drinking sun tea in the summer and I still really like it.

Sometimes I'll go do my hair or clean the house or go outside (if it's nice out).  I've brushed my teeth sometimes and that has helped, too.

I can't sleep very well on planes - I've tried but it's very very light sleeping.
