What questions did you ask?
Hello Everyone!
I'm compiling my list of questions to ask the Nutritionist and Surgeon on my appointment on April 7th at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. I am seeing Dr. Drew.
What specific questions did you ask your nutritionist?
What specific questions did you ask your surgeon?
Although I have learned A LOT from my research online and from message boards and reading other peoples' forums, I want to ask thorough questions since my husband will be with me and I want him to learn about the procedure, too. I always forget things when I go to these kinds of appointments so I want to write it all down!
So far I have a lot of questions but I always like to ask in case someone has something I don't.
Thanks in Advance!!!! :)

Hi!
Two things I was concerned about with the NUT:
1. how can I possibly stay healthy if I can only eat 1 oz at a time and 400-600 cal/day?
2. will I be hungry? How horrible to be constantly hungry and can only eat 1 oz!
The nut will have an agenda of what they want you to do, so you aren't really expected to go in with a thousand and one questions. Just ask them as they occur.
Surgeon:
1. complications that apply to my health situation. I was a BMI of 42 with no other real signicant health problems - that makes a huge difference.
2. How soon can I get in?
My surgeon is very well known and well respected, so I really felt comfortable with him. I did ask him a few last minute questions right before surgery, but for hte life of me I can't remember what they were!
Your program is a good one and so is your surgeon. I think you will have lots of opportunities to ask questions.
Good luck!
Amelia

NUT = I asked her to give me examples of the foods at the different stages (i.e. liquids, puree'd, soft, etc.).
SURGEON = I had these questions written down on paper so I wouldn't forget any. I asked about incision length (I had an Open procedure), diabetes after surgery & how they handle that in the hospital, and that was about it.
My surgeon also asked me a question..."Why do you want this surgery?"
I'm not sure if Dr. Jones asks that, but be prepared to answer it just in case.
Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the appointments. I know all the appointments can get bothersome, but it is SO worth every moment in the end!

Hi Anna,
I had Dr. Drew... and he is very thourough, he will go over the surgical procedure with a diagram and walk you through his expectations of you and what to expect after surgery. He will give you the most common complications and even uncommon ones. I loved this about him...he up front and will answer any questions you do have.
My surgery was at St Joe's, so I don't know that the Abbott nutritionists, but making sure they give you a list of approved foods for each stage and sample meal menus are a big help.
If you have any questions, let me know. I work at Abbott also, so if you want to meet before or after your apt, let me know, I would love to meet you!
Take care, Nicole
