So much for a stress free recovery

Well, today has really been crappy.  I am a chemical engineer and work for a company that does water treatment.  We were very involved with ethanol plan****er treatment and until last October that was great business.  Not anymore.  I am involved in a project that will go through the end of May that was a huge risk for my company.  The owner underbid by $2M to get the project and guess what?  We are $1.5M in the red right now!  So over the last week, they have laid off 9 people because of this shortfall, even my boss and my bosses boss!  I know I am safe until end of May, but after that if we don't get some more business I very well may be unemployed.

I am one of two professional engineers there and we have assumed we would fare ok becuase they need engineers to solve existing equipment problems as well as help get new business in the door.  I have the least seniority, so I am afraid they may decide they only need one of us.

I have thought about moving on anyway for other reasons, but I really like my job and would hate to leave right now.  I know I will find something else (hopefully quickly) but this is such a bummer and I have had a nauseated feeling in my stomach since 10 am when my boss called to give me the news.

So, anyone need an engineer with water and wastewater treatment experience?

Fargo, Bismark and other cities in ND probably need some of that particular expertise right now. Tthey probably use engineering consultants, so you would have to research who they use.

Good luck,

Wow - 6 days out, and you're already faced with some stress that you probably (I'm guessing...?) would have eaten your way through in the past!  Talk about a test, eh?

I have no words of wisdom, but I DO hope you have faith that someone else is in charge, and there IS a plan for you!  Whether that's staying with this company, or finding something different!  If you'd already thought of moving on for other reasons, perhaps now would be a good time to really think about what those other reasons are?  I mean, it's a bad time for ANYONE to become unemployed for ANY reason, no getting around that.  But try to keep that glass-is-half-full attitude going.  Focus on healing, getting accustomed to this new relationship you have with food, and do the best job you can when you get back to work!

Even if you have the least seniority - sometimes that means you're the least expensive, and most likely to be retained.  That's a sad fact out there, my hubby is home right now while a co-worker with much less experience is still working, but for less money than my hubby was making.  Argh...

Hang in there.  You've got time to find other options if it comes to that.  You're not feeling well and that can make everything look worse. It's scary I know, but you are skilled at what you do and you'll be OK.

Sorry to hear this.  You could start looking just in case you get laid off.  I know job hunting is no fun, but maybe if you start now instead of waiting, something would turn up.

I'm looking for work myself.  In the last year-and-a-half, I've only worked 6 months (temp position).  Part of that time I was out for health reasons.  I graduated with a degree in Health Information Technology in Dec. '07, but haven't found anything yet.  Anyone need someone in the medical records area (scanning, release of info, coding, etc.)?

I am sorry to hear this - looks like everyone is dealing with these layoffs one way or another... so hard to deal with, especially so little out of surgery. Take it one day at a time and try to heal. I'm so sorry.

I worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for 20+ years and they were ALWAYS looking for sanitary/mechanical engineers.  Check them out on USAJOBS.gov

I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this right after surgery!  Try to take some time for you and don't worry, even for a few hours a day!  When one door closes, another opens!  I truly believe that!  Hang in there!

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this - AND SO CAN YOU!!
