Need to talk
HI I am almost 11 months out and I can tell you that you have come to the right place for advice, the people here on this board are a great support system and a overwhelming source of information.
I went in the hospital on the 5th and went home on the 6th. Not much post op pain at all( no drains either!!) I had Dr. hornbostel. The pre op testing was psych eval, scope, regular blood work, found a goiter during my physical and had to have an exam by a endocrinologist to make sure that my thyroid was ok(I can't think of anything else).
Would I do it again? HE** YES!! I had knee surgery about 11 months before my bypass and I had severe arthritis in my hip, on high blood pressure medicine and also medication for depression. Within a month I was off all medication, and my knee and hip are almost pain free. I am also 101 pounds down from my highest weight and I feel great(most of the time). lol
I had no complications. Yep, that's right, none.
Dr. HOrnbostel is wonderful!!!! I am so glad that I was in this area where I could use him. Hope this helped, Layla

Thank you all for your responses. I am just so scared of the possible complications, I have 2 children at home and I don't want to die because I am so worried about being fat. I really don't have any health problems except for my weight and achey knees from carrying all of the weight and at times I get short of breath.Has anyone had Dr Scott perform the surgery? He calls it the divided rnY is this the same as the traditional gastric bypass. there are so many names for the surgery I get confused. Again thanks for all your support and help
I was refered to my surgeon by another surgeon that said Dr. Scott and De la torre were some of the best. I know Dr. H is good too. So I think you are on the right track with your DR. I too didn't have any health problems just being overweight. Then when I went for my pre surgery testing they found I had high blood pressure. Next stop diabetes. I want to stop this before it happens. I'm excited about my new life. Attend a support group meeting. I went to one last night and I'm so happy about my decision. Its nice to see people that have had it done and are looking and feeling great. Everyone one of them said it was the best thing they ever did. EVER! Best of luck in your journey.
Dear Lisa, WELCOME first of all. 2nd-I totally understand about being around for your kids. I have 4-and I KNEW that IF I DIDNT have the surgery-I would be dead by 40. I chose the lapband to start with-because it was the least evasive-but as I researched-I decided against it-because I did NOT want something that was going to require me a lifetime of maintenance of the fills and so on-I HATE HAVING to go to dr.s~
Within 6 mos of my RNY-I felt "normal" and for the FIRST time in my LIFE-I am living like a normal person! Not only would I do it ALL OVER again-I would do it every year. No-its not without risks-but neither is staying obese. There was a lot of post op pain-but only a couple of hours! I got dehydrated post op and I got a UTI and an infection BUT...I wasnt sipping constantly-it cannot be stressed enough! I was in the hospital 3 days-BUT...Its normally just the two-my hospital was put on lock down due to the horrible ice storm in 06. Ive "angeled" 15 girls for surgery and some of them have had some complications-all recovered-but for the most part-smooth sailing for ALL of them!!!! Its got to be your decision hon, and I wish you the best of luck-I have NEVER felt better in all of my life-and I sure as heck dont feel 40-I feel like I am in my 20s emotionally!! The WOW moments are incredible and a sz 12 now-I weighed 450# at one time! I NEVER thought this would happen for me! Good luck-if you have any other ?s, please let me know! Love and Best Wishes-Janet
