Bible Question

I have a question. I know that the King James Version is what we use in church. But right now my hubby is having serious issues with trying to understand the bible. We are studying the New Testament in Gospel Doctrine. Chad heard about the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and was interested in getting it for help - as an addition to our KJV bible. It it supposedly written in plain to understand english. Is there any church policy on this that you know about? I checked LDS.org and all it said was that the church "primarily uses the King James Version". I couldn't find anything that we are to "ONLY" use the KJV. Input appreciated. Thanks! Tammy

"We believe the Bible to be the Word of God as long as it is translated correctly ..." Other versions of the Bible translate the scriptures to suit their perspective and it is NOT always the way our Heavenly Father wants it translated. There is a book available at Deseretbook.com that is a NEW Testament study guide that will help you understand the New Testament. I urge you to spend the few dollars and buy it so your family will have the insight that Heavenly Father wants you to have. Good luck, Melody

Tammy, I just called Deseret Book and asked them for a recommendation for a New Testament Study guide that was easy to understand. There are many New Testament study guides available now but the descriptions lead me to understand that they are for going into more depth into the New Testament. Before you get discouraged, I did find out about a book that is being re-released so Deseret Book does not have it yet but they should have it in the next couple months. The name of the book is "The New Testament made easier". That might be something to check on. Good luck, Melody P.S. The Bible as a whole is difficult. You have to understand the culture and the way the people talked when the scriptures were written. In our Ward we have a gospel doctrine teacher who is fabulous. He always goes into the background of things so we can understand more fully what the lesson is about. You are not the only ones who struggle with understanding the Bible.

I have many reservations about the new American Standard-it really is a new translation, and not in line with the KJ edition. It is HARD to understand the bible-a good gospel doctrine teacher is very helpful....just remember to take small bites-it isn't a race to see how many scriptures you can read, but how many you can understand. I struggle with scripture reading even though I read very well. The great thing about the Church editions is that the newer ones include the Joseph Smith translations-and they really do help to make things clear. Study guides can help, but more than that, pray. I have found that researching a subject, such as the atonement, and reading the scriptures that apply to that subject help the spirit to help me understand. Dont give up! hugs- lynn
