Topic: RE: What's new for Wednesday, April 6th?
I've had nasty ear infections that wouldn't respond to antibiotics.
My Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor said the bacteria was "pseudomonos."
Might not have spelled that right.
Anyway, apparently this nice little bug likes to live in ear canals so if you get on outer ear infection, some call it, "swimmer's ear", chances are you're dealing with pseudomonos.
Cipro was what I was prescribed and it was a nuke where the other antibiotics were pop guns.
Ask your doctor if it could be pseudomonos and if he could prescribe Cipro.
Antibiotics like Augmentin, and Zithromax (which is what I was on) do not cut it against pseudomonos.
Good Luck.
Try this before you try a CT scan.

Hi Melody-thanks for posting a whats new posting!!! April 6 is quite a day for LDS peoples. I remember telling my dad once that we should have Christmas again in April cause that is when Jesus' birthday REALLY is....he just laughed at me!
Today my son went to his first Scout group-he just turned 11 and is a real scout now. I hope he has a good time. Scouting is hard for me because I don't have someone who is always there for him to do 'guy' stuff-sometimes guys from church do step in, but other times, they don't have time, or want to just do things with their own sons and not include mine. With luck and lots of prayer, he will have someone to take him on the campouts and things so he can earn his badges.
I went to my doctor today because my ear has been hurting like mad-it feels swollen down in my jaw, and I can't hear as well from that ear. I have been on antibiotics for a week and nothing has changed-this is the second round of them I have been on. She is sending me to the hospital on Friday for a CT scan to see if there is a tumor or what. She couldn't even see all the way into the ear with the otoscope. I can't sleep, I am so worried. I have to get a hold of my home teacher tomorrow and see if he will come and give me a blessing. I just hope whatever it is isn't going to delay my WLS. On top of everything else, I haven't been called by the temp agency for weeks, so I am flat broke without a job. I am trying to stay positive, but it is just so overwhelming sometimes.
I am just glad I have this board, so I have somewhere to go when I am feeling lonely.
Hugs to all of you, my brothers and sisters!

Thank You Melody for posting the What's New.
How cool to be able to fit into your dh pants of a 34. That is the size my dh is now in. I'm thinking he will stay there. Much better than the 50+ he was in when he had his surgery last June.
I didn't know that today was either of what you mentioned. Thanks for telling me.
Nothing new here. I've been lurking for some time. I think about posting and then something threw out the day happens or whatever and I get side tracked. I've been/am struggling. I guess it is pretty noticeable because I saw our branch president and his wife tonight at A&W when I was getting my kids a Root Beer Float treat and she says "WOW...you look really tired. Are you babysitting still?" Yes I am. I have a house full of kids. She asks if I was there to get dinner also and I said no just a snack I was on my way home from Madison. ect ect. She then mentions how tired/pale I look. nice. Two hours before I had been crying and I guess it was still pretty noticeable on my face. Anyway - I'm here.
Good Night.

I had a WOW moment today. I tried on a pair of my DH pants that were a size 34 waist. They FIT! When I tried them on I didn't think there would be any way I could squeeze into his pants.
What's new with you? Today, April 6th is of a valuable significance to the LDS people. Did you all remember that it was the date the Church was re-organized? Did you remember it is the actual date of our Savior's birth? Many, many blessings to be thankful for today.
Have a wonderful, wonderful day.

140 pounds and hopefully still losing
Topic: RE: Issues an LDS person would have to consider
Hi Lynda, you've come to the right board. Come back often with any questions or concerns. We'll try and give you any help or advice we can.
I was one year post op on March 8th. I've lost 120 lbs and am at my doctors goal (my goal is to get rid of this excess skin). I've been very open about my surgery with my ward members. I have received nothing but positive feedback and support from them. I have since learned that there are two other members of our ward who have had this surgery a few years ago. They don't talk about it at all, not even to me. It's a personal decision I guess.
I prayed about having this surgery for months before I finally had the surgery. In reading D&C 9:8-9 it reads
8. "But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right."
9. "But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; . . ."
Listen to your feelings. Live the gospel to it's fullness so you will be entitled to the answer that is correct for you.
I also had a priesthood blessing (my husband is a non-member) from our home teacher. I had a small complication but it was easy and required a second surgery within 24 hours of the first but it didn't prolong my hospital stay of 3 days nor did it prolong my recouperation. I was back teaching within a week of having the surgery. (I taught pre-school as well as a class of EMT'S). The priesthood is there for us to use and as a blessing for us.
In regards to living off rice, wheat etc... alone. The church also has a program where we can our own food. One of the things that we can can is dehydrated refried beans (great protein source). These beans are wonderful! I have at least one bowl of these beans every day. There are things we can use in our food storage that we can eat and are good for us.
Good luck Lynda

Hello Lynda from Provo
So good to have you on the board. I had my surgery 4/23/04 so I'm sneaking up on my one year mark. I've lost 85 pounds and feel better than I have in way too many years. Still have about 45 pounds to lose to get to my goal.
In answer to your questions let me give you my views. As far as negative remarks from Church members..I have never had any just lots of support and compliments. When I started getting serious about this surgery I prayed and also received a Priesthood blessing. My journey took me to a surgeons office that he just happened to be LDS..wow. In Texas thats a big WOW...there are a lot of LDS here but to just happen on a Priesthood holder that just happens to be an awesome surgeon that was a personal miracle to me.
When I made the decision to have the surgery the night before the surgery my hubby and step son gave me a Priesthood blessing with annointing and everything that was promised has come to pass. I haven't had any problems...I healed quickly and I'm feeling great.
My personal belief when it comes to answers to pray is that there are three answers we can receive.. Yes...No... and not right now. Be patient and do lots of research so that you feel confident in your knowledge of what all is involved in this journey and it definetly is a journey.
With regards to food storage..we should have foods in our storage that our families will use. The rice, oats, and wheat are great but there's so much we can do with drying foods and canning that rice and wheat does not have to be our main source of food storage. They are important but so are all the other things we will need. I feel very strongly that the fact that this surgery is available to us and has come so far over the years that it is another gift from Heavenly Father to this earth. Medicine is incredible. You wouldn't hesitate to have a heart, liver, kidney or any other body part transplanted if it meant saving your life. This gastric bypass was a life saver for me. I didn't have any major problems such as diabetes, heart problems or blood preasure problems but they were looking very hard at me in the very near future and I had to do something that would work for me. Believe you me I've tried every diet in the world and just was not successful with it. This surgery is a tool and without the same work and effort you put into any diet it will not work the way it should if you don't do your part.
The Word of Wisdom...when I was eating the way I was before surgery..thats not following the Word of Wisdom either. I believe that when we learn how to grow gardens...do canning and food storage we will be blessed when the time comes and we may need to be able to teach others how to do this as well. I believe we will be able to provide our families the foods they need to be healthy...and if and when the time comes that we need to use our food storage weather its because we've lost our job and need to rely on our storage.. or had an unexpected appliance die on us and have to make a large purchase and money is tight and we need to rely on our food storage...or when the time comes for the 2nd coming and all that may be involved with this..Heavenly Father is going to be there to guide us and we'll be able to eat in a way that our body needs.
Be patient and continue searching for answers. Heavenly Father will answer your prayers...sometimes we just don't see the answer at first.
I know I've been very long winded..haha sorry.
Remember too... this is all just "Alfie's Opinion"...I wish you well and keep coming back to this board there are wonderful people that post here.
Have a great rest of the week!!
Alfie

Topic: Issues an LDS person would have to consider
At first I had this posted on the Utah messageboard and noone reacted. I meant to post it here. I must have been real tired last night. So I'll try again, this time I've got it on the right board. Here goes...
I was wondering if anyone has ever had a negative reaction from ward members to their WLS. Has anyone ever said anything to the effect of "You're not following the Word of Wisdom," or, "You body is a temple and you are desecrating it."
When I was doing the Atkins diet I got the Word of Wisdom speech thrown at me a lot.
Also, given the fact that the church believes in preparedness and given the fact that we are obviously in the Last Days, what happens if I find myself in a position where the only food I have to eat is the fourteen hundred pounds of wheat I have stored in my basement?
I think non LDS assume that things will go on the same as they always will but I think we who are LDS know better. We have to take the whole preparedness issue into the equation when deciding to go ahead with WLS. We know there will be wars and rumors of wars. We know there will be natural disasters. We know there will be plaques. Is it wise to alter my body knowing these things can and will happen and I must be prepared.
This is one of the struggles I'm having. I'm not so worried about the opinions of my fellow ward members but I am worried about what should happen if I have to eat nothing but rice, oats, and wheat for a year.
One other thing, did anyone pray about the decision the have WLS? and did you get an answer? I've done lots of praying but the heavens are silent on this one. I don't know what that means. It may mean "no" or it may mean "whatever, do as you like, makes no difference to me."
Oh, what a connundrum!

Thank you for your reply! I have decided to have my daughter put in an alternative school for kids who are acting out - its a free program run by the state. She is really mad, but thats too bad. I work teaching at a jail and found out about this resource through their anti-recitivism programs. My daughter thinks I am treating her like a common criminal, but after finding her shoplifiting, smoking, and drinking, I told her she is a common criminal and would rather be in the mom system then the jail system. Glad to hear all turned out so well with your son - it gives me hope!

My son started acting up at thirteen. Flunking classes, skipping classes, giving his Young Mens leaders all kinds of grief. He started wearing black, stopped bathing. Became real mouthy to all adults especially his family. Wanted nothing to do with his family. Refused to do chores.
I took him to a pyschotherapist who said my son was on the road to drugs and alcohol. He wanted us to put him in his adolescent program which consisted of an ankle moniter and very strict rules.
We didn't have the money at the time and our insurance wouldn't cover it.
Well, about a year later we discovered he was into drugs and alcohol. My husband and I were actually the ones who turned him into the police when we found the drugs and when we caught him drunk or high.
He is now in the court system and it is working very well. We have a lot of therapy to attend and there are very strict rules. He tried to buck the rules at first but found out very quickly that the state bucks back even harder. He spent some time in Juvenile Detention.
Now he is on the Honor Roll at school, he is respecting rules at home, we are all gettin along very well. I am quite pleased with how things have turned out.
If I were you I'd be doing some serious snooping in her bedroom. I'd read her notes and letters, check all the pockets of her pants and jackets, look for things like bottles of air freshener such as Lysol (used to rid the air of the smell of marijuana), eye drops (marijuana use causes red eyes).
One thing to look for. When a person smokes pot their tongue turns green.
If you find anything illegal I'd go straight to the cops with it.
You can order drug test off the Internet for pretty cheap. I'd do some random drug testing on her.
Basically, you've got to get serious control here. If you have to go to school with her and attend all her classes to make sure she goes to school, fine, do it.
You could always show up at her school, remove her dog collar and leash, take it with you and drop it in a dumpster somewhere.
As a parent you have a right to take your childs things and get rid of them or sell them, even if the child had paid for them with their own money, if you don't approve of what they've bought, you can take it and get rid of it. You have that right.
As far as her class attendance, you're going to need to get her teachers cooperation on this. If they won't cooperate, go to the principal, if the principal won't cooperate, go to the school district, if they won't cooperate, go to the governor, go all the way to the White House if you have to. These people have a responsibility to work with parents.
But seriously, if you went to school with her just once and went to all her classes with her and if you made it clear that if she sluffed school she would have to go to school with you, she'd go to school. It might help if you went to school with her in your bathrobe and slippers.
Seriously, good luck. We have to get tough and take control of these kids. These are the Last Days and there is too much to lose if we don't rise to to challenge.
