So you all can see my confusion--- I posted this on other boards as well-- half the people say he's not getting enough food at 1800 calories-- and the other half says he should be eating more! :) We'll both be seeing a nutritionist in a few weeks. I'm hoping she can get us pointed in a better direction for us personally. Thanks!

there are so many factors involved in weight loss. i didn't see where you said how long it has been. if its been more than 4-6 weeks with 4 lb weight loss and TRULY eating only 1800 cals, i would go have a full workup with a doc to check all the functions. 1800 for a man is DEFINITELY not too much. perhaps too little, but only a doc could tell you that. his resting metabolic rate is at LEAST 1600 (mine is 1600 and i'm a 5'5 woman) so it does not make sense to go any below that...

My opinion is he's getting too many calories. WLS greatly restricts the amount of food you can eat and some even further restrict how much you absorb. So if WLS works and you're consuming much less that means you're getting a lot less calories.  I'm not a doctor nor a nutrionist but it just seems logical to me.  Eat less calories, lose weight.  Eat less calories, burn more calories, lose even more weight.  Here's what I'd do.  First, try eating more calories. Go up to 2000 or 2200 calories for a week and write down how much weight is lost. The next week, consume only 1500 calories and record the weight loss.  Go with which ever makes you lose the most weight. I don't think he'll lose 20lbs or even 10lbs in one week but it could happen, you never know.  Try it out and see what works best for him.

Hi Shari - ( I just got back from vacation - loving to see all the new peeps here!) As has been said, just keep on keepin on with what you are doing. My sole comment would be to measure your food for a week.  Get a look at what one cup looks like in your dishes, what two ounces looks like, etc.  Many people underestimate caloric intake, and over estimate calories burned. If he feels good about confirming that angle, then just keep at it. He can try eating at 1500 calories for a few days, then upping to 2000 for one day, back down to 1800 for a few days, concentrating on eating more protein-rich foods and vegetables. Sounds like a hard core plateau and he can only  try to be more stubborn than his bod right now.  I feel his pain.  My body is the same freaking way. Once, when I trained for a half marathon, I nearly doubled the amount of running I was doing at the time for 3 months...and lost NADA - not ONE pound. I did nto eat more, was journaling.

This sucks eggs sometimes, no way around it.  Don't give up.

We both measure everything we eat. Thanks for your advice!
