Yeah, I think the human body is a little more complex than a simple across the board calculation.  It may be a good starting point, but isn't the whole story

Absolutely online BMR calculators are just an estimate.  Online calculators will mostly not take into account the exercise you do or any variance in activity level between individuals.  As Shari mentioned, your BMR will also change over time.  There are any number of factors that play into your personal BMR  and using an online calculator will only point you in the right direction to help you zero in on something more accurate.  The weight loss center I weigh in at has a breathalyzer (sp?) apparatus that is more accurate.  You can also back into a pretty accurate number if you are willing to weigh in daily and use some statistical tools. The important point to take away from the discussion in terms of the original post, however, is that you must lower your calorie intake below whatever number of calories it is you burn on a daily basis if you are going to lose weight.  Randomly subtracting 500 calories from your diet may or may not have the effect you desire.

Agreed.  And well-summarized.

Thanks everyone for your imput!!! It is important to me to loose weight in a healthy manner and not mess up my body. I appreciate all of your comments on this complicated topic.  I guess i will remember  the old saying "slow and steady wins the race". This is a change for a life time not for a few years. I am an impatient person, but I just have to remind myself that it took me a long time to get to where i am and it will take me a while to get to where I want to be.
