Atkins Day 10 - GOT BEEF???

Here's some parts of a book by Dr. Ravnskov called "The Cholesterol Myths". He has medical studies to back up his statements. More info: http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm 1  Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, but a substance vital to the cells of all mammals. There are no such things as good or bad cholesterol, but mental stress, physical activity and change of body weight may influence the level of blood cholesterol. A high cholesterol is not dangerous by itself, but may reflect an unhealthy condition, or it may be totally innocent.

2  A high blood cholesterol is said to promote atherosclerosis and thus also coronary heart disease. But many studies have shown that people whose blood cholesterol is low become just as atherosclerotic as people whose cholesterol is high.

3  Your body produces three to four times more cholesterol than you eat. The production of cholesterol increases when you eat little cholesterol and decreases when you eat much. This explains why the ”prudent” diet cannot lower cholesterol more than on average a few per cent.

4  There is no evidence that too much animal fat and cholesterol in the diet promotes atherosclerosis or heart attacks. For instance, more than twenty studies have shown that people who have had a heart attack haven't eaten more fat of any kind than other people, and degree of atherosclerosis at autopsy is unrelated with the diet.

5  The only effective way to lower cholesterol is with drugs, but neither heart mortality or total mortality have been improved with drugs the effect of which is cholesterol-lowering only. On the contrary, these drugs are dangerous to your health and may shorten your life.

6  The new cholesterol-lowering drugs, the statins, do prevent cardio-vascular disease, but this is due to other mechanisms than cholesterol-lowering. Unfortunately, they also stimulate cancer in rodents, disturb the functions of the muscles, the heart and the brain and pregnant women taking statins may give birth to children with malformations more severe than those seen after thalidomide.

7  Many of these facts have been presented in scientific journals and books for decades but are rarely told to the public by the proponents of the diet-heart idea.

8  The reason why laymen, doctors and most scientists have been misled is because opposing and disagreeing results are systematically ignored or misquoted in the scientific press.

Also, take the time to read this.  Don't just blindly believe what these doctors tell you. Take your health into your own hands and don't be a sheep.  #4 - Animal fats and cholesterol do not cause heart attacks: http://www.ravnskov.nu/myth4.htm

That must have clogged up the Daily Plate log...holy **** that is obscene.  But it made you happy...and seems to be working, so go for it. All i will say is...do what works for your palate and preferences. To others, there are other ways to get the same result. For example, I hang out with road bikers who eat nealry zero meat - not very many fat peeps in the group - HOWEVER - these people ride bikes like we drive cars, too. China, Japan, Thailand - fairly LARGE groups of people eat very little meat, no red meat to speak of, rice/veggie based diets - not much heart disease or cancer or obesity for them (til western food came into their countries) - so what gives there? All about what you want to do every day! The end justifies the means, I say.  You are so funny.

I will never believe that high cholesterol isn't bad.  I am not putting down Atkins.  It has proven itself for most people for fast weight loss.  I would do it myself, but I can't seem to stick to it.  Do I think it is a healthy way of eating, NO!

Obviously, I must not be that worried about my health that I allowed myself to become obese in the first place.  I guess I block it out and always think nothings going to happen to me.

One person in particular that I think that has benefitted from this diet, especially due to her diabetes, is LVS.  There seems to be no denying that.  LVS doesn't seem to eat like you do though.  She counts her calories as well so know way is she eating all that.   Brenda

I had backed away from Atkins years ago, buying the hype that it's not healthy.  But after several other diet attempts have come to conclusion that it's the misperception of what it is that is not healthy. During Induction (and I'm on extended induction), it's veggies, fats, protein in that order.  On ongoing weight loss you up the carbs and other foods are reintroduced.  And on Maintenance you take it further.  The end result is that once the weight is off, it's like other diets deemed healthy, like South Beach and Weigh****chers. I believe it's the misperception that Induction is the diet...it is not...and how one should eat on Induction that is what's unhealthy.  Is Induction bacon and beef?  No.  But I'm not going to jump down Chris' throat on that.  He said it was an unusual day and he lived accordingly.  We all have those days.   My typical induction day is chock full of healthy proteins and fats and veggies: Preworkout: 1-2 hardboiled eggs Breakfast:  Egg white omelette with veggies and cheese Snack:  Optional (nuts? cheese?  Minimeal? veggie) Lunch:  Cauliflower potato salad, quiche with veggies Snack: Sometimes an extra serving of the veggie quiche or other snack Dinner:  Fish, Asparagus Snack:  sugar free jello with dash of heavy whipped cream I get mostly lean proteins/moderate fatty proteins, and a ton of veggies (more than average dieters, dare I say).  I eat about 10% carbs or 20g (though b/c of my workout I allow myself up to 35g).   Is it a high fat diet?  Yes.  Is that a problem?  I don't think so.  Find a study that proves a direct correlation between fat in the diet and heart problems.  It's a presumption, a theory that the government began purporting in the 70s, ironically timed to our grain economy and with our beginning obesity epidemic. I think ultimately, it's most important that one get the weight off.  And it is.  You all read my struggles.  I mean here's the irony, I'm eating the same or more calories and just got rid of the things that keep my insulin higher and my weight on.  So now I'm breaking through the insulin resistant wall and the weight moves.  My endocrinologist felt this was most important. Ultimately I'm doing what works for my body.  There's a reason it works--it's what I need to do.  I can't ever say I felt as you did, that I allowed myself to become obese...because I felt it was completely out of my control, given I was always eating healthy and exercising.  It just showed me the other way was killing me.... I will have medical tests again down the line and see if this was a problem for me.  However, I came in with great cholesterol and now moderate insulin.  Let's see what happens.  If my #s change, I will react accordingly.  But I just don't see how eating healthy fats, proteins, and a load of veggies is unhealthy. Eating processed junk, even within Atkins parameters is, IMO, but one day?  Come on...let's cut Chris some slack.

If he only eats like that now and then that it will obviously not the problem that it would be if it were more often.  I ate that crap often and that is what I know did this to me.  Believe me, I'm no angel when it comes to eating junk.  Do I limit it a great deal more now than before, YES!  The stuff Chris was eating is high in saturated fat and that is unhealthy.  Do I  think saturated fat clogs arteries, Yep!

I didn't say he did eat it often and I don't condemn anyone.  I allow myself slack, so why wouldn't I to Chris?  Truly not my business how he eats, it's his.  Point I was trying to make was just that this is not a way to eat IMO regularly.  I don't care what articles are quoted.  There are just as many, if not more, stating otherwise.  I choose to believe what I choose to believe. Branda--Find a medical study that proves conclusively saturated fat clogs arteries and that it causes weight gain.  It doesn't exist.  It's theory, rhetoric and nothing more. Christa--Not on your case, was just addressing the general trend of the thread.

My name is Brenda not Branda.  Not interested in arguing.  We will still have the same result in the end even after the arguing.   You will still see it they way you see it and I will still see it the way I see it.  Waste of  time pursuing it.  Chris is easy going and I think it takes more than that for him to take offense to.  He's a big boy, let him speak for himself.  He is definitely entitled to his opinion as am I. You must be kidding me.  You are the one constantly having trouble getting along with people on and off this board.  Get real, girl.  You don't see me having any issues on this board.  Sorry, face reality, easy going, definitely not a part of your personality. Brenda
