3 weeks out and I have some questions
Hi all. I had gastric bypass 3 weeks ago and I am doing well overall, but struggling with food issues. I feel so limited in my choices and kind of weak most of the time. I have one book that says I can be eating things like oatmeal or cream of wheat or creamy soups, and another list that says no to that stuff. Can anyone tell me which is right?
Also, I lost like 20 lbs. in the first 10 days, but now it seems to be at a standstill and I have lost little to no weight in the last week. Is that normal?
Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!
Dayna
Hi Dayna,
Welcome to the NY board. Sharon in Dr. Holover's office should have given you a food list...follow that and you'll be fine. Make sure you get in your water.
Congrats on your weight loss, that's a great success. Welcome also to the famous 3-week stall! After experiencing it myself and reading lots of posts, I think we all go through. Just keep on doing what you're supposed to be doing, and the weight will come off.
take care,
Dayna,
Congratulations on your surgery and welcome to the loser's bench. The soft-mushy stage of food gets a bit boring after a while, but it is almost over. When you met with Sharon, Dr. Holover's nut, she should have given you a list of foods that were appropriate for this stage. Here are some ideas: cottage cheese, egg salad, tuna salad, ricotta cheese (add some sauce and seasoning if you like), chili, scrambled eggs, oatmeal (protein fortified from Dr. Holover's office), refried beans (melt some low-fat cheese on top and add salsa and sour cream if you like - tastes like tacos),mashed up meatballs. The key is to make sure you get in your 60 grams of protein. Cream of wheat & regular oatmeal don't have that much protein in them. Since you cannot eat much, try to eat high protein items and don't forget the protein supplements. They are a huge help in getting in the protein. Also, remember to drink your water.
I hope this helps. Please keep us up to date on your progress.
Hugs,
Lisa

I am 4 weeks out and I lost 24 lbs my first week and then stalled for like 2 1/2 weeks... and then suddenly it started comming off again. It was very frustrating. I went for my month check up and was told to try anything... minus salad, steak, rice, and pasta. So it gets better...next week you will be eating different types of food.

I can't speak to what to eat with the RNY but I will give a little piece of advice. Think about weighing once a month. It makes it easier to miss ups and plateaus esp. during the losing phase. I found it a great help to do it that way.

Dayna,
Welcome & congrats!! Your stall right now is normal - it's your body's way of saying "Hey - what the heck did you do to me?"!! It will even out & for awhile & you will hit stalls again! The trick is not to get discouraged & stay off the scale!! It can be your worst enemy!!
The food issue is going to stay that way for a while, unfortunately. Right now at 3 weeks out you are going to be limited to what you can eat. Please don't follow what a book says without checking with your surgeon or nutritionist first!! Every surgeon has a different program & you need to follow what they tell you so they can treat you better if something should go worng!! Their plan is tried & true & they know how it works!! Now, having said that there are ways of spicing things up at this early stage. I don't know exaclty what you should be eating but you can try things like baked ricotta cheese (add some parm cheese & spaghetti sauce & bake it until bubbly), refried beans wamrned up with a little juice from the salsa (avoid the chunks until they tell you try it) & add some shredded cheese - voila... a little italian & mexican!!! Cottage cheese with cinnamon & splenda is good too!! There are a lot of choices - you just have to be creative!! There is a cool woman on the main board who has great recipes & suggestions for all stages of WLS - check out her blog... Her name is Michelle aka Eggface!! http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/
Good luck!! You're going to do great, just be patient... it does get better!!!
