TWHers.....Sleep Study Question
VSG on 01/25/12
I've got a gut instinct that I am going to need a sleep study done because I have a giant neck! Well at least I think so!
If you didn't do a sleep study through your GP - did TWH set that up for you? Did it cause you a major delay?

When I went through TWH over a year ago, we needed a current sleep study. . . . . .within two years. Mine was 21/2 years old so I had to get a current one done. I wasn't offered a sleep study appointment through TWH but that's probably because I lived so far away. The clinic I went to that was closest to home was fully booked for at least 6 months. I asked to be on the cancellation list and got in within 3 weeks.
I recommend starting the process with your GP and if it's also set up with TWH, then take the appointment that comes first. . . . . .unless TWH wants you to use their facility now.

TWH usually wants a sleep study, especially if you snore or have a thick neck (I have both but no apnea - go figure). There is a sleep clinic in downtown Toronto at Dundas and University (actual address is 123 Edward St.) called the Toronto Sleep and Pulmonary Centre that can usually get you in within 10 days and the results take an extra week to two weeks and then are faxed back to your GP if no apnea, or an appt is set up with the sleep specialist if there are concerns. Have your GP refer you and then when he has the results back get a copy yourself and give them to the NP at your appointment, which was what I did, or have them faxed over to the clinic to TWH and added to your file.

Too funny, I'm also a belly sleeper. Not sure if it makes a difference, though I found it hard to sleep during the study since I couldn't lay on my front with all the crazy wires and gunk attached to me, it wasn't fun - but the techs are really nice. I was pretty sure I didn't have apnea but given my neck size and the snoring I figured they'd ask me to, so you're likely best off to do it too.
In hindsight I would've went through my GP for the sleep study. It didn't delay things too much but it would've avoided the 2nd Internist appointment.
I didn't have any symptoms of OSA and did not want to do the study at all but I do have severe sleep apnea so the study/results likely will save my life on the operating table.
