Hi everyone, I haven't been on here since the day before my surgery (Aug 9th). I just wanted to say thank you to my Angel Sandy and also Tracey for updating everyone on here after my surgery. Also thank you everyone for all your well wishes and support :)

I had a minor complication after my surgery, I was having loose bloody stools and my Hemoglobin levels were low. The Dr.'s weren't 100% sure what was going on. I stayed and extra day (3 days total). When they sent me home they said they were sure it was old blood left over from the surgery and my H levels had come back to a low normal. The whole thing left me all emotional, but I am better now.

I recieved excellent care by my Dr. and all his residents. The nursing staff were kind and helpful. I even made friends with another girl who had WLS, her mom had had it too 4 years ago.

As each day goes by I am feeling better and better. I am down 30 pounds since I started (13 from Optifast). I feel great and I already have more energy.

Sooo here are a few minor problems (lol) Trying to get my protien shakes in, I use to drink them all the time before surgery (I'm a vegetarian). But for some reason they taste yucky now!? Oh well I am doing what I can to get them in. Oh and I am adding BeneProtien to most things too.

BM-I so wish they were normal, I am trying to add BeneFibre to stuff and drink lots of water. Any other suggestions?

Recipes!! Can someone please give me a link for the recipe site? :)

Thank you everyone for the wonderful support :))))

Nice to see you posting and glad to hear that overall you're doing well.  You are most welcome, by the way, its been a pleasure!

Unless you can get a lot of water in, I believe that BeneFibre can have the opposite effect - I think Milk of Magnesia might be a good bet, but I have problems here too, so I'm not an expert.

Your taste will definitely change after surgery, at least temporarily.  I've heard that some people tend to tolerate the Isopure shakes well after surgery as they aren't a milky consistancy.  I personally, use Bio X Extreme Whey Protein Isolate Natural (unflavoured), in my coffee to add protein, but not all plans allow coffee right away.  I started with decaf then mixed with regular and still drink a combination now.

Here is the recipe site:

All the best!

glad to hear you are doing better.
Your taste buds will come back, so don't give up on the protein shakes.

I too had BM problems early out, used Ducoluxe to get the mail moving and benefibre, but be careful with the benefibre it can have the opposite effect if you take too  much.

welcome to the bench

Hey Jennifer, so glad that you're doing ok, too bad about those complications, hopefully that's the last of them. Hugs.

People say that their tastes have changed after surgery, maybe that's why they taste yucky. See if you can get some samples from places to find one that you like. I'm almotst 6 months out, and i dont use them anymore, so maybe you'll find that you can get enough protein in without them, eventually..

BMs - you may discover that you have a 'new normal'. You're eating differently than you were before, so different in, different out. Don't exactly strive for BMs like you used to have. Strive to be not constipated, and not loose, but if your normal changes to one every couple of days instead of one a day, or if they're different looking, that might just be the way they are now.

As far as other suggestions, try (when you're allowed to) to have a prune a day (they're good for iron too). Warm water first thing in the morning will get things moving. I added a couple of tablespoons of all bran buds to my yogurt (again, when you're allowed that in your diet).  Try to give yourself time in the morning to have a BM. We tend to be too rushed (i think guys have this down better than us ladies do, my hubby spends hours in there every morning).

Glad to here everything went well!

I have a problem with the protein shakes too. I tried the Priemere ones before surgery and thought they tasted like chocolate milk and all was good, but now I can't stand protein shakes. Mostly because the smell is so bad, it's all I can taste. I bought the isopro drinks on the weekend from Zellers. Much cheaper than the big bottles of protein powder so I thought I'd give it a try. You can't taste the protein at all (or smell it!) but it does have a slightly creamy quality in consistency. I'd try that if you don't like the other ones.

Best of luck!
