How much sugar can cause a dumping reaction?

Early out, on two occasions I was baking and had a mindless taste of what I was making - some oatmeal crust for a date square, and a lick of batter for my grandson's birthday cupcakes.  Both times, within a half hour I was lightheaded, a little dizzy, and needed to lie down.  Probably a mild dumping reaction according to my NP and NUT.

Today my husband took me to Moxie's and I ordered the glazed salmon appetizer.  I forgot about the sweeter glaze on the salmon, but it is really just a brushing on - there is no pooling of glaze on the plate, so there's not much.  But it is sweet, and I don't know how much sugar is in it.   I ate only half the little piece of salmon, and really enjoyed it.  But about a half hour later, on the way home, I was feeling that same lightheaded, need to lie down feeling I had experienced before.  Could that tiny amount of sweet glaze cause a dumping reaction?  Thank goodness I haven't had a serious case of dumping - the mild reaction was enough for me to make a real conscious effort to not taste anything when I cook.

Hi Megan
It's a myth that only sugar and fat cause dumping. Dumping is caused by any undigested food dumping from your pouch, through your stoma and into your intestines. As the food is not digested your body hurries to make insuline to deal with this and that causes dumping. Some never dump, I dumped on everything. Keep an eye on that and report back to your doctor. One of my strategies was to have a good carb with protein to maintain level blood sugar.

That's interesting - I never knew that.

Both times I had a "dumping" episode it was because of red meat -- not enough chewing!

I could be wrong, but you probably didn't dump on the red meat, but I don't know enough of what happened to be sure.

Dumping usually involves pain in the lower part of your abdomen, dizziness, profuse sweating, nausea, rapid heart rate, and diarrhea.  When I dump, I sweat at the drop of a hat.  One minute I am fine and the next it is like someone turned on a tap.  I also get shivers and lower tummy pain and the "trots".  Very unpleasant.

When you don't chew properly, you can also get nauseated and sick feeling, but the pain is usually in the top portion of your abdomen, near to where your pouch is, and most times it causes vomiting.
This isn't dumping (at least that's the way I understand it).  It is the equivalent of your pouch rejecting what you have sent down.."No thank you", and up it returns.  Blech.  NOT fun.

It took me a while to figure out the difference between the two until I had a severe instance of "dumping" after eating some No Sugar Added Chapman's ice cream.  I dumped on the sugar alcohols and let me tell you, I had no confusion after that.  Then I really knew what dumping was all about.  Thankfully it hasn't happened too many more times and the 1 or 2 other times were very mild.

How much sugar causes dumping is different for everyone and not everyone will dump.  I just stay away from the sugars. I know I do not do well with sugars.  I also stay away from anything deep fried. I tried a french fry once they were my husband looked so good and I thought what could be the harm of having one. Well I found out i thought he was going to have to pull over I felt so sick.  By the way watch out for sugar alcohol it can cause dumping also.
When eating out learn to ask if there is sugar in the sauce and if they can not answer your question stay away from it. Best to play it safe than be sorry.
It is not easy but worth it.

My NUT advised that 5g of sugar can cause dumping. I dump on carbs. I found that out when had a serving of Soy Crisps. The carb count is fairly high (17g total) and right to the bathroom I went! And I also got heart palpitations and lightheadedness. Guess I need a new snack item.

Im a huge dumper, no more than 5g / serving for me.. but natural sugars im ok with, like in fruit..

I love Larabars and was afraid to eat them because they have 19g / bar, but it is all fruit , tolerate those well..

but i stay away from protein bars that have high sugar alcohols as they kill me!!!!

I've only ever dumped on pasta and sauce.  The strange thing is, the first time I had it, all was well.  The 2nd and 3rd times, I was in the bathroom within 1/2 hr. with diahrrea.  Next time, I'm going to try whole wheat pasta and see if that makes a difference.  If not, I'll have to find a new brand of sauce.  The counts on the brand we use aren't bad, but maybe they're just enough.

I have also had only one pouch rejection - with a slider burger and bun.  And I think that was because I didn't chew it enough.

I've also had a hard time digesting chicken, and I think was due to not having any liquid/sauce with it.  It seemed moist enough, but I guess after chewing, it lost quite a bit of its natural moisture.  Now I'm using a yogurt and roasted garlic sauce.  Mmmmm.  (And a breath strip for dessert!)

So far, I'm good with the few sugar mistakes I've made (knock wood).  I'm a baker/taster, too, and that's a hard habit to break.
