vitamin shopping list
Hi Bingodiva,
I take Spectrum chewables multivitamin (Life brand)
Life brand liquid calcium citrate
D-drops (added to my calcium)
Bariatric advantage b-12 sublingual tablets (they are the best tasting ones I could find. They taste like berry. I bought them at the pharmacy at humber river regional)
Good luck with surgery!

Yes, unfortunately our clinics all give some amount of bad information. I'm basing mine on scientific research. You're not absorbing the D drops properly because they are oil based and there is some fat malabsorption happening post-RNY. In time your labs will show it. If you frequent the RNY board you will see that this is widely known and standard advice. You can change what you're taking now and prevent it or dig yourself out of a hole later - your choice.
First, get a full set of labs done pre-op to know your base-line and begin addressing any deficiencies before surgery. Most Canadians are low in D and if you menstruate you are also at risk for low iron. Depending on your diet you could be low in B vitamins. Find out and start supplementing for anything you are low on right away.
Post-op you are going to need a good daily multi-vitamin. Ensure it has trace elements and comprehensive mineral coverage. A good test is to look for Selenium, if Selenium is not listed then it probably doesn't have everything you need. Seniors formulas usually have good amounts of trace elements. You usually take at least 2 multi-vits a day. A good idea is to take one Senior's formula and one regular or Women's formula for a balance of what you need. The brand doesn't matter.
You're also going to need calcium citrate, vitamin B sublingual tablets, DRY vitamin D3, and quite possibly iron as well, but decide on that based on your labs - if you are menstruating there is a 65-80% chance you will eventually need iron and it is better to prevent a deficiency than to try to fix one.
Good luck with surgery.
