lol

When I said we don't "know" I just meant that we haven't been thru the process yet to have a personal experience.  You don't have to have personal experience to be able to give researched experiences.  I was just curious if you had tried these things yourself, pre op.  And you said you did so that's great.

I did say you are well researched.

I never spoke for you, I just nicely asked a question.  No harm intented.

As far as the doctor who did it or studied it.....  A doctor well schooled can have a wide scope of knowledge from hearing what his patients have gone thru, but he couldn't tell you what he has done when these problems happened to him.  He can just give you advice from his research.  Which is still great, and apppreciated.  I just asked if it was first hand for you.

Now I must go take a halls for my sore throat from you jumping down it.

If you knew me in person you would know I meant no harm.
relax.

Brenda, thank you for clarifying. However, when you said;

"Well I think it matters because we aren't there yet.... so we don't really "know"."

you were speaking for me as well by using the word 'we'. You also intimated that the only way to 'know' something or have real knowledge of it is to go through it yourself. I disagree.

I think the way I wrote my post was very clear that I have personally tried the things I listed, and I don't see how whether I have had surgery yet is at all relevant to my providing some ideas for protein intake. If you knew me at all, you'd also know that I won't be having RNY for my surgery. Does that disqualify me from giving advice to RNY post-ops in your opinion?

I'm not offended and I hope you aren't either. I'm just asking you to consider the assumptions you made that led to this thread getting so wildly off topic. It clearly states in my profile that I have not yet had surgery, so you asking that on the board was for more than just your own information. Also, why would you think I had not tried the protein sources I was suggesting, etc...

You're welcome. :)

Not only speaking for you and me, but everyone who hasn't had wls, there is no way we could "know" from personal experience, what it feels like.  We can have head knowledge, but until the deed is done that is what it is.

If you have never given birth, for instance, you could give a researched answer on a question but you wouldn't really "know".  (I can see ladies getting upset at a male doctor delivering their baby when he says "just relax" just breathe, you're ok. Or it can't be that bad. lmao)

With that being said, your knowledge on the topic is outstanding and seems well researched.  (not just this thread but others).   When I first came here I thought you were a vet because you answered with such detail.  I thought there must be more than one person with your avatar name or something close, when I did click on your profile and seen you didn't have your surgery yet.

Thanks for all your knowledge on the topic.  And your imput. :)

Hi Brenda,
thanks for your comments, perhaps I overreacted earlier and was a bit defensive when it was unnecessary. It can be difficult to decipher exactly how to interpret a written statement, one of the pitfalls of online communication.
I really appreciate how positive and encouraging you are to everyone on this board, you always have something nice to say and you're a very positive presence here.

Hi Pat,

I'm glad you understand where I was coming from now.  No attack on you and your imputs.  It is so true with communication online, especial for someone like me who don't word things right.

Have a great night Pat. :)

relax, Pat. Brenda asked a simple question. She meant no harm or  to cause ill will.

Its nice to know what perspective people have, when they're answering a question on here. You're right about only speaking from your own experience, the sample size being one. But personal experience still matters. Anyone can read from a text book and explain what possible symptoms are from. But, if people wanted that, instead of personal experience, then chances are they'd read their own books or google some tips on how to relieve nausea.

You're right Monica, personal experience is an important source of knowledge, I didn't mean to say that it isn't, it's just limited. When people ask for help on here, I'm assuming they want good information, regardless of its source. The poster may feel too sick or unable to navigate online resources to find good info themselves, and I'm happy to provide it.

Sometimes it matters Trish, sometimes it doesn't.  And sometimes it's in the delivery.  Only speaking for myself, when I had questions early out I really wanted to hear people's experiences who had been through what I was going through.  It meant a lot to know that they had actually tried things and were able to share what worked and what didn't.

I think some people (myself included at times) become concerned if there is someone (not saying you do this all the time) makes statements without the disclaimer that they know it from reading/research, not from actual experience.   Know what I mean?

I know what you mean Karen. I try to be upfront about the fact that I haven't had surgery, but that I've done an usual level of research on bariatric surgery due to my fight over the DS. What is mind boggling to me, is that it matters to anyone! Good information is good information, regardless of its source. Maybe it's my prosecutor brain, but I personally value averages and data and the like far more than an anecdote - I know not everyone does, but I like to give the science based info so people have it as well as the personal experiences. I regularly get personal messages from people telling me my input is valuable, so I've resolved to keep doing it, regardless of the fact that it is deeply unappreciated by a few members of out board.

In this particular case, I do have personal experience though - I'm a regular protein shake/unflavoured protein eater. That's what makes this thread so bizarre!

Yes, I hear what you're saying for sure.  I think sometimes those of us with rearranged guts think we're special and have perhaps different needs/experiences.

Oh.

Wait.

We are/do.

LOL
