How long for weights/exercise?

I asked my surgeon yesterday at my check up and he said to be careful so that I don't do anything yet that strains my abdominal muscles or I could pop the incisions.  When I asked when I can do weights and the machines at the gym, he said to judge for myself when I'm ready

It might be a moot point since it looks like I may have gall stones.  Going for an ultrasound next week.

Thanks
Julie

My dr told me after 6 weeks that I should be ok to exercise and do stuff. Sorry about the gall bladder. I had mine out years ago. Easy and not bad. Good luck!

I started off with walking, and gradually built up my stamina. When I felt comfortable enough, probably around 2 months, I joined the gym and did 30 minutes of the bike or the treadmill and then 20 to 30 minutes of weight machines. I never, and still don't really at 4 and a half months, do ab exercises (my plan says to wait till five to six months before doing any real core activities). I mostly do the leg machines (the ones that target the thighs) and a couple of the arm machines (the ones that taget the batwings and the bra buldge so to speak: you can tell I have an excellent grasp of anatomy right?! LOL). I added aquafit at 3 months and recently did trampolining, which does technically work your abs because it causes core instability, but I listened to how my body was feeling.

Take it easy and start slow, but fix those stones first!

Ok, thanks.  I've started walking and wanted to start in the work gym when I go back.  Guess I'll stay away from the ab exercise.

If I remember correctly Dr. Sohi told me to wait about 6 weeks to do weights but cardio was ok.  That was 2 years ago so don't quote me!  As it turns out I have gall stones and kidney stones.  Dr. Sohi is working on resolving this.  Guess you and I just got lucky eh ;)

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

Thanks Cheryl.  I will probably weight til at least 3 months.

As for the gall stones, I am not convinced.  I still think I have a small ulcer that wasn't picked up on the Upper GI series my GP ordered.   We'll see who is right, me or Dr Sohi in 2 weeks, lol.

Good luck with all your stones ;)

I was told by my surgeon....no weights over 5lbs until 3 month check up and he would re-asses at that point. He said better safe than sorry. There are other exercises you can do with out weights to tone up.
At my 3 month he said I could start using weights to still to be careful and better off with cardio rather than hvy wieghts.

Ok, I would rather be safe than sorry too.  I guess I just feel anxious to be doing more.
