Is this the dreaded "foamies"?
I had some fish for supper tonight. Or at least I started to. I thought I was eating slowly enough and in small enough bites, chewing really well, but I must have gotten distracted and eaten too big a bite or something. It was at the beginning of my meal, so I wasn't full yet.
Anyhow, I got this awful pain as the mouthful was going down, and then I realized I must have eaten too much at once. I had to go lie down on the couch, and my husband brought me a plastic container in case I threw up - I felt like maybe I'd have to, thought the food was stuck or something.
But I didn't throw up, I just salivated like crazy and had to keep spitting it out (didn't want to swallow - I thought that would make it worse), and my nose was running too. Not to mention lots of gurgling noises inside, a few burps, and that damned pain in my esophagus!
Finally the pain subsided and whatever was caught inside at chest level went down. Needless to say, I'm not hungry anymore and won't be finishing the rest of my supper. I just want to rest and sip water now. (It's been half an hour since the last bite.)
So is that what "foamies" are? God help me, but I never want to eat again.

To be honest, to me that just sounds like a near miss on the vomiting.
I've never had "the foamies" but I think you foam at the mouth like a rabid dog. (from getting air in the saliva).
I have a lot of trouble when I am hungry, I take a big first bite then start chewing slowly. Well EVERY bite needs to be chewed slowly. It's a PIA.

Ah, okay. I figured because I ended up with tons of foamy saliva in that plastic container that maybe that was what they call "foamies". I've done a search on OH but while I'm finding lots of posts by people saying they've had it, most don't describe in detail what it actually is.

Ugh. Fish is a no go for me after surgery, even at almost 2 years out. Salmon is the absolute worst. I throw it up every single time...which begs the question of why I still give it a go now and then. haha
I think what you are describing sounds like the "foamies". I don;t know if there is any real definition for what that is, but basically, instead of throwing up your stomach contents, you throw up slimy, foamy crap. I had it once so bad. I had eaten 2 Timbits (I know- slap on the wrists), and I suppose I ate too quickly because I had major pain in my pouch and esophagus, but for the life of me I could not vomit those dreaded Timbits. For hours I just kept gaging up foam and slimy saliva.
Such an awful thing to experience. I don't know what kind of fi**** was that you had,but if you try again, stick to soft fish like Tilapia, not salmon or tuna steaks.
I had halibut, baked in the oven - I figured it was soft and flaky enough. However, I did notice that when I chewed it, there was no such thing as chewing it into nothing the way you sometimes can with other foods. The strange thing is that I had halibut last week and it was fine, so I guess I just ate too much at once this time around.
Hours of foamies! God, if that story doesn't stop me from ever trying Timbits, nothing will! At least mine only lasted half an hour tonight!
Anyhow, thanks for the advice, and the description. Nothing like this forum for gross descriptions of bodily functions, huh? :)

Thanks everyone! And Marny, that's EXACTLY what happened. Instead of vomiting the piece up, I kept burping up mucus, my nose ran, and I generated tons of saliva that I had to spit out. Good to know!

But you can't. That's the problem. Believe me, after about 10 minutes of it, I actually tried! And all that comes up is this slimy saliva. It's the most awful feeling.
But hey - lesson learned! Chew chew chew, and tiny, tiny bites!
