Tim's is good for chili too.

I was kind of at a loss the other day at the mall myself in a food court, couldn't find anything.  Thank goodness I had some melba toast and cheese in the car!

Can you eat salads yet?  I'm thinking maybe if one of the fast food places has a salad with grilled chicken slices on it, that could be helpful - just don't put the dressing on it.

How long will you be on the road? I usually find that I can bring homemade items and keep stops to a minimum most of the time. I like to bake, so I make protein muffins and things like that which I make full batches of and freeze individually so I can pull out convenient serving sizes. As an example, I'd take a protein muffin and a piece of fruit. Also, protein bars are great on the go. Also, I pack a lunch bag with a freezer pack and have taken yogurt or cheese and crackers with me conveniently, but these wouldn't work so well for super long trips....

In terms of fast food places, I'm further out, so I have a bit more options in my eating but use from this what you will.... sometimes I'll get a kid's size cheeseburger and just eat half the bun but all the meat (it depends on where I am and how greasy the food looks if I go this route or not). Sometimes I'll get a grilled chicken sandwich and eat half of that (again depending on the size and the place... some fast food places can make really dry chicken and some really greasy, neither is a good choice for me)-- I really like Arby's for Chicken sandwiches because it's roasted chicken so it's a bit healthier and less greasy in my opinion. Wendy's and Timmy's have good chilis. At subway I've had their 6 inch meatball sub but I get them to scoop out the centre of the bun so it's essentially the outside only, with cheese and green peppers on it. Most places now offer some sort of salad, which you can get with the dressing on the side and just dip your fork into to get the taste on it.... You could always stop off the highway at a local grocery store and pick up something to go off their hot table.

Anyways, hope these help! Have a good trip!

I pack up my food where ever  I go in  a insulated bag with freezie boxes on top. Stays good for hours and I can stay on track,  I can also control portions etc

Ok... Since everyone else is covering the other options... I might be nutty to say this but... Most small towns, and all cities have a grocery store. Many grocery stores have a deli. Metro rocks especially for this but others have it too.

Snackish... Grab a round of 8 laughing cow wedges, and some paris toasts (baby melba toasts shaped like bread). Leftover taken home is not a big deal.

Need real food?

Cheese: Go to the deli and BUY 1-2 oz of cheese (unless they have the cracker barrel individual ones) or the refrigerated section and buy a pack of cheese strings. Those plain cottage cheese single serving cups... etc.

Deli meats - Buy a package of the lifestyles turkey breast, or go to the deli and have them thing shave you a meat of your choice. 1-3oz of it. Or they sometimes have pre-made sub packs at some laces with like 4 of them for 3.99. Buy one, strip the meat, a little lettuce, and chuck the rest to the birds or in the trash. They rarely put sauces on it so ask if you need it.

Got a place with a hot deli? Meatloaf/meatballs, etc. etc. etc.

Hummus and crackers (often they have snack packs at a metro).

Need high protein, and low carb and know you are low on protein powder at home? Stop... Buy one, and a 500ml of water. Drink at least half of the water or pour it out. Your choice. Use a piece of paper as a funnel... Add a scoop of powder to the funnel and it will go right into the bottle (slowly works best). Re cap it and shake the hell out of it. Less water in the bottle is thicker... more is thinner. That simple. Walmart, shoppers, one of the dozens of specialty stores and most grocery stores can accommodate you on this.

All of these can typically be done in a 3-10 minute stop if you have an idea of what you are going for... The 1-8 type line rocks, and deli counters sometimes have a way to pay, as well as the customer service kiosk if the person looks bored.

Is the idea perfect? No but it is an option and you can keep it really inexpensive. Like around 3-6$ if need be.

If I'm going on a road trip for a few days I will pre pack foods.. This time if year I won't put it on ice..in the trunk is fine..if its or a few hours then chili is good..I won't pay stupid prices for subway's crappy processed meats and cheeses on wilted veggies I would rather go to a real restaurant and get grilled meats on fresh veggies.....if I'm in a food court I usually look for Teriyaki experience and get the chicken special but ask for more veggies no rice and no teriyaki sauce..... Burger joints.... Burger no bun and tomatoes and pickles and what ever veggies they have on the side if the cheese is real cheese and not processed I will have that too .... McDonald's chicken snack wrap...eat the guts no wrap .. Larger grocery stores have the single serving yogurts ..**note** I don't like the pre made yogurt and fruit and granola bowls ..the yogurt is usually really high in sugar and those portions are huge for post ops...but I do like the pre cut fruit cups they will store better then the yogurt so you can make it last a few snacks

Like Shell said most grocery stores have deli's, and many have roasted chicken where you can buy the whole chicken or a quarter (though the whole one is much cheaper by weight but you need a fridge to store what you don't eat then).  Add a few raw almonds, a few grapes, some soft cheeses and you have a veritable buffet for the fussiest pouch! kiss
