Eating liquid/drinking rule still apply?

In my notes I have that if you are eating soup or some other such liquid consistency for a meal the no drinking before/after does NOT apply.  Just wanted to get your thoughts on this?

As long as the soup doesn't have a lot of chunks in it (i.e. veggies, meat, pasta), then it makes sense to me that the rule would not apply.  I know it didn't apply during the early post-op phases, when everything you consumed was liquid or very close to it!

I would think its all the same, but I don't know.  I have experienced vomiting if I've followed apple sauce or pudding too quickly with water though... not pleasant!  Guess just follow what your pouch tells you is alright!

I didn't in the all liquid phase, make any difference between drinking and eating liquids...but am now over 5 years out and know I have to follow the no drinking rules for the rest of my life...the only time I allow a personal non compliance is when drinking a glass of wine with dinner ( I'll probably go to Bariatric Hell for doing so).

They don't want you to drink with a meal because you do not have a valve at the bottom of your stomach.  Liquids just flow right through.  Liquids will push solid food through too fast for your body to absorb everything you need.  So in the case of a soup or a protein shake, IMO, I would adopt the same rule.  First, you need to make this practice a habit, so why not have it apply at all times.  Second, if you are choosing a soup (which btw is not a good choice unless you are early post-op and cannot have solids), then why not let it sit there as long as humanly possible?  It is already going to go down too fast anyway.  Why help it along even more?  Incidentally, to my knowledge, the reason protein powders and shakes tend to give you that full feeling, if that they have additives which cause them to thicken in your stomach so that they are not processed as quickly as other liquids.
