My tastes have changed :(

Came home from the hospital yesterday, and to my surprise nothing tastes the same seriously. My favourite protein whey powder tastes like yuck. The other two I've got here too. I don't feel hungry but I'm sure my body is going to soon retaliate. Any ideas? Can I add half a frozen banana? (Please don't yell just a thought) I feel I need something that will comfort me( not a quarter pounder from McD's) even coffee is yuck and my favourite rooibos tea. Thank you OH Friends for your thoughts. I want to do this right, changed all my old bad habits months before surgery, this just hurts a bit!

Hi Robin,

Were you milk sensitive before surgery?  If so, try a fruity protein powder.  Webber has a Mango Peach (I think) that I got at Shoppers.  Maybe that would go down better.  You can also add flavorless powder when you are into soups and stuff.

I read great advice that really helped me in the early stages when I couldn't stand protein powder. Put a scoop of protein in a bowl at the start of the day. Throughout the day what ever you eat add a pinch or 2 of the powder...it's not enough to alter the taste of what your eating at all and at the end of the day you've gotten in an extra 20g of protein. The advice my dietician gave me is to eat whatever tastes good to you. For me early on it was squash soup, applesauce (unsweetened but added cinnamon) and mashed potatoes. I added protein to each. Best of luck to you!

You would probably find the banana too much at this point. There are many other things you can add to it. Soft fruits such as strawberries. SF syrups. also as someone else said add to your soups and food. I did this a lot.

Food is fuel not comfort. If you're like me, you have to let that go. I would stick to the prescribed diet for now and as time goes by, you will find your taste changes. For things like protein, you just have to get them down and not make a thing out of it. Give it time, you can manage it but it's hard.

Best of luck!

Hi Robin, im 2 weeks out and had the same problem. Anything sweet made me gag. The protein shake i took ages to choose before surgery, i couldnt even stand the smell. So i went back to popeyes and just got plain vanilla. That way i could add whatever flavourings i wanted too. Now i learned that costco shakes are ok, i can tolerate them much better than the powder. And they have 30g of protein. I add skim milk powder to almost everything and i make protein jello which is so much better than plain jello. Disolve a sf jello in a cup of water then add a cup of greek yogurt and pour into a bowl. I used the 30ml cups from the hospital. U have to get ur protein, water and vitamins in at this point. Thats the main focus. It will get better i promise.

I switched to premier protein after surgery, and had unflavoured stuff to add to food. I hated it....but actually reveled in the thought that I could care less about food anymore and was happy my tastes changed. To me that felt like a little miracle and that it was helping my head during the honeymoon period (a lot of my tastes came back, with a vengeance, and I was not happy about that).

It does get better, I promise you that. Check out the before and after photos for inspiration. The first month is the worst and then it truly is much much better.

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

I am a few weeks out and the taste will change again. I couldn't eve think of something sweet, although I pounded back (and still do) the protein shakes. I love the GNC Chocolate Whey Isolate (as much as you can love protein shakes). I hated coffee, but am now liking the flavour sometimes and hating it others.

You will find that the reality of eating something is never as yummy as you think it will be. I think we build the missing flavour up in our heads so much that it is bound to disappoint. I thought eggs hung the moon. The first one was good. Now...meh.

When you start being able to eat other foods, I think you will probably find new ones that you prefer, but I think (and I kind of hope) that "loving" food will stay away. I will look for something else to love.
