80%
I was talking to my psychologist this morning about how many people are successful in weight loss. The program at TWH was started in fall, 2009. They have tracked people and found that 80% are successful. I found that really encouraging.
Often on the forums we hear about the people who do not maintain and are trying to get back. We do not always hear from the success stories. As I continue to maintain the weight loss I needed to hear that their are other people who are successful as well.
So I thought I would pass this on to those who might also need to hear it
Wow, that's great! I would also be interested in hearing some 5 year stats once they have them regarding maintenence - that's the important thing for me. I haven't found it that difficult to lose the weight up to this point - but I'm betting that maintaining is going to be a little trickier to wrap my head around.

I had kind of a profound moment the other day. I was looking in my e-mail and seeing all the junk telling about some new diet or miracle food to lose weight. In the past I would have checked this out for a possible new diet or food to try. It dawned on me that not only did I no longer need this but I could just delete it without even checking it out! WOW! I felt free.
When was the first surgery with the program done? I'm guessing early 2010. So is the study done from only the first year? Or from 2009 to present?
I ask, because I see that a lot of people are "successful" for the first two years. If they lost weight due to just malabsorption, and not drastically changing their lifestyle, and going back to their old ways, a lot find themselves regaining starting anywhere from the 18 month mark.
Or perhaps they are saying that the success is getting to goal. I would love to see the stats.
Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!
I got the impression it was from 2009. So people would be 3-4 yrs out I think. I would also like to see the stats. I find now that I am at goal and 21 months I live in fear of gain. I guess I needed to hear there were a lot of success as well as some failure. I will not exactly relax but maybe not be such a fanatic. I am hoping that because there are now such great supports out there that the success rate is going up all the time.
Anyway I intend to do whatever I can to be one of the 80%. You are obviously also one of the 80 and are inspirational to follow
Thanks Pat. Like you, I always keep in check that regain is quite a possibility. This is something I have to relax with, simply for life in general, but for training. I'm not getting enough in, and i'm exhausted by nighttime. I've touched based with a few RNYers who are also trainers, who have learned the ways of training and adding in carbs.
But I will always want to keep in check. I know too many people who are not part of the 80%, and are much further out than me.
