Gallbladder removal at same time as GBS???

Hi everyone,

I just got the results from a recent gallbladder test I had done, and it has been confirmed that my gallbladder is trying to commit suicide. Unless I end up in the ER with gallbladder pain, the surgery wait time is about 6 months. This will be about the same time as my GBS (hopefully). It seems crazy to have 2 surgeries when they could be done together (if my gallbladder holds out long enough).

Does anyone know if HRRH (I'm a patient of Dr Sohi) will agree to do both surgeries at the same time if the gallbladder is known to require removal? I'm going to call his office on Monday but getting an answer may require an appointment, which could take months. I'm hoping that someone here has run into the same situation and might have some insight.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I sure hope they do. I was in the same position as you.   I was in pain from gall bladder attacks and held off until I saw the surgeon in Guelph to ask if they could do both so I didn't have to have two surgeries.  And the surgeon agreed so both were done at the same time.     Good luck

Several folks have had their RNY and gallbladder removal scheduled for the same time but woke up to find out their gallbladder was still there but their RNY had been done.  Good luck with two at the same time!

I had my RNY surgery and gallbladder done at the same time 5 weeks ago at TWH.

Going in I was told the priority was the RNY, and if it was possible to remove the gallbladder once they were in there barring any complication it would be done as well. Things went smoothly, they were able to move around all my bits and pieces and get it done.

Advocate for yourself and good luck.

Mine was just removed 3 weeks ago, 5 months after surgery. It was not too bad, off work a week, a little sore, but not too bad. I wish they had taken it out with my RNY but they dont like too. Now in your case, I would hope they would do it together...however if u r in pain...its better to get it out and over with. I didnt have stones pre op. Best of luck.

Dr. Sohi is a very cautious doc and will act accordingly, he will answer you honestly if you ask so please do. Stands to reason that both procedures could be preformed at once. Post Optifast would be a prime time to remove the gall bladder as the liver is in good shape to be manipulated. The liver and the gall bladder are attached to each other and the liver needs to be moved aside during bypass.

All you can do is ask, it's not unheard of :)
