How old were you when starting your WLS journey?

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious as to how old everyone was when they started their WLS journey? :) I'm currently 24. My estimate for surgery is this coming January. I will be 25 in December. I haven't seen too many people my age.

Personally I wish I would have had wls as an option when I was your age. I just turned 50 and am waiting for a surgery date. My weight has been fluctuating for many years, but once I hit 40's there was no losing any of the excess. Slowly year after year the pounds kept adding up.

Good for Lina_Ann for choosing to do something about your weight issues while your young.

Best wishes for a happy , and easy journey.

I'm 56. If the surgery had been available when I was your age I probably would have gone for it then.

SO this is my second go round. I first started when I was 35, then I got cold feet. Now I've just turned 41 and wishing I had done this the first time. I have no idea when my surgery will be, other than not soon enough!

I'm 56 as well and like terrylynn, things really started to go downhill for me in my 40's. I have always been big, but was always in great shape (always at the gym) and never above a size 12. I had my daughter when I was 40 and after that I was exhausted all the time...stopped working out, spent many afternoons sleeping when my kids napped (my son was a toddler) and eating anything and everything as I was always hungry. Hormones played a big part as well...went into menopause immediately after nursing my daughter. No matter what diet I tried in the past (ie. weigh****chers, bernstein) I lost weight then gained back much more. I'm really looking forward to surgery, living a heathy and active life, getting my body back, and enjoying my later years fully engaged in life. Thanks for the post, and good luck to all who are on this journey.

Thanks for listening,

Barb

Congratulations! And welcome to the boards.

i looked at getting lap around 27 ish? But thank god a backed out. Then I got serious around 36. Surgery at 37.

there aren't too many people here under 30 from what I've seen. You will find tons on Instagram though.

I love Instagram to see more of what people are eating and doing. But a word of warning, I've found there's a lot of questionable advice on there. (Well, everywhere really)

its great to find people your age *****ally understand your specific challenges and a shared experience, but keep in mind the best advice will come from those vets who've been at this a lot longer, and that will skew older.

Signed,

an old and a newb

Hey,

I'm at the surgeon appointment stage in this journey. When I was referred last year, I was 20! I am now 21! I've heard many people say how incredible it is to make this move while we are young. Our bodies are a little more adaptable to change, and our skin has a better chance of bouncing back! (Not fully, but better than most)

feel free to add me on here. Congrats on getting to this point. Hopefully it won't be too much longer now! Keep us updated!

I'm starting at 5'1, 255lbs btw!

Hi there! I started at 40 and got my surgery before I turned 41. I am so happy I did. Only wish I had of done it earlier. I know a few people that are around your age or a little younger that are in the program...the ones that have had surgery already are doing AMAZING!!!! And so will you!

All the best on your journey!

I was 28 when I started the process and 29 when I had my surgery. The clinic was definitely concerned about me being too young and having to manage for basically a lifetime. I'm so glad I had it done though. So many people have said to me that they wish they had done it sooner.
