Optifast and Hormone Imbalance?

I'm on day 16 of optifast. Things are going okay as far as not being hungry. Im at the point that I'm not missing or desiring food. My issue hasn't necessarily been with food, but with my thyroid, PCOS, and genetics causing excess weight.

I am having a major problem with hormone levels though. My mood is so off. I'm either crying or I'm angry, or both!! I've dealt with hormonal imbalances from thyroid and PCOS, and sometimes it can get very bad, but this just seems uncontrollable. I can't stand being around people, but also can't take time off work with my surgery happening next week.

I'm worried it will only get worse after surgery. I'm worried a doctor will try to make me take anti-depressants. My family doctor kept giving me antidepressants in my early 20s. I must have been on 5 different types and they all made me a complete zombie and sick to my stomach. A doctor in my late 20s finally discovered my thyroid and PCOS issues which affect hormones specifically.

Has anyone dealt with this, and if so, will it go away or just get worse? How did you cope?

There are a bunch of us with hormone related problems. I have hypothyroidism. The dose of my meds have actually been lowered which is fantastic. I was on one of the highest doses of synthroid.

Now for the crying. As you are losing weight you are going to get emotional. Our fat stores hormones and as we are losing fat the hormones are being released. It calms down and mine hasn't been too bad.

Obviously I can't attest to your emotional state but if it is bad I would talk to your doctor. Even call the clinic and talk to the Psychologist.

Sorry to hear you're struggling. I don't know much about PCOS and thyroid issues but I also struggle with hormones and specifically PMS. I've found it to be worsened since having surgery. In Opti it was bad, post op it's worse and I find lasts much longer at a time than before. Hopefully after the initial loss of weight as the weight loss slows these issues will too.
