thanks! I do actually use this site. And I have those exact instructions printed out. For some reason, my answers are coming out right. And I swear I am following each step.

Thanks everyone. I think I need to just realize I am an Algabraic loser. I am just sooooo disappointed in myself for having to re-take a class. It is really going to mess up my fall term and put me 6 months behind scedule for clinicals.

sadly my hubby loves math and so I sent him your post and this was his reply

y² – 9y + 30= 0
y² – 9y = -30
↑ Half is -⁹/₂ then squared is ⁸¹/₄ ,
so y² – 9y + ⁸¹/₄ = -30 + ⁸¹/₄
(y – ⁹/₂) ² = ^-120/₄ + ⁸¹/₄
(y – ⁹/₂) ² = ^-39/₄
y - ⁹/₂ = √(^-39/₄)
y = √(^-39/₄) + ⁹/₂

Which could be reduced to:
y = 9 + (√39) i
2

I managed to figure out what you were typing! AND...........that is the correct answer.

I am going to copy and paste your post into word........then print it so I can follow the steps and figure out where I was making the mistake. I did get as far as 81/4 but then mixed something up!
