Setting your weight goal

Hi all,

Thought I would share this regarding setting your weight goal.

Here is the rule of thumb from my nutrtionist.

For a male take 106 lbs for 5 ft and for every inch over 5 ft multiply by 6.
ex if you are 5'10 106 plus 10*6 or 166 lbs.

For a woman take 100 lbs for 5 ft and for every inch over 5 ft multiply by 5.
ex.  if you are 5'2 100 pounds plus 2*5 or 110 pounds.

You can use a variance of plus or minus 10-20% depending on your build.

Sadly that would make my ideal weight 125 lbs and I'm not sure I have ever weighed that, or would want to - at this age I would look like death warmed over. And quite honestly I think it would be physically impossible for me to even get down to that weight, especially at my age.

This sounds like the same figures they use on the insurance weight charts and for the majority of people are unrealistic in achieving or maintaining them.

When Dr Boe and I discussed my weight loss goals and I told him what they were he was very satisfied with that - I have not hit my personal goal yet (which is losing 200 lbs - I've lost about 175 depending on the day) - and when I do lose the 200 lbs I still will not be at the charts 'ideal' weight for my height - something I can live with, trust me. Its much healthier than I've ever been in my life. And both Dr Boe and my PCP are still extremely pleased with my weight loss now. My bloodwork is awesome - I feel fantastic - and I look better than I ever have. That was (and is) my ultimate goal.

So I say find the weight that works best for you - is your healthiest and one that you can maintain.

Ugh, that  would be 130 for me..  potentially skeletal  - I think I weighed that sophomore year of high school...  plus, that would add another 12 lbs to lose on to my goal and I was actually thinking about adding 8 to my goal and instead of targeting 142, targeting 150..

I don't like this calc at all Geoff!

I don't think that I like this calculation either. That would make my goal 135 pounds (I am 5'7"). Dr Brader's goal for me is 170 ( which I am less then 20 pounds from acheiving - yay!) but if I went much less then that I would look (and probably be sick). The formula that you have is what the insurance comapies use as "ideal" I don't think that it is practical though.

Thanks for sharing!

That would put me below 110 pounds.  While my goal is 130 (4 pounds away) and ideally I want to see 125 I cannot imagine being below 110.  People are telling me now I am losing "too much"  Which I know I am NOT but to know I am still 20 pounds over my weight isn't fun!

Sorry you don't like the formula guys.  Didn't come from me.

It worked for me though.  I am 5'10 and according to the formula should weigh 166 lbs.

I weigh 169 lbs so I am within the vairance.  I have a medium build.

Guess the important thing is to be happy with whatever goal weight you choose.

Enjoy the night all.

Sorry, I don't like this formula either.  My surgeon wants me down to 105, I am 5'1", and I feel that is too low for me.  I am 120 currently, and all I can feel are ribs and hip bones, and the fluff that is left.  I am going to discuss this with him on my six month visit which has been put off twice and will finally be on July 6th.  People won't mention anything about my weight loss, because they think that I am sick.  We shall see what happens after my appointment.

I"ve heard that too.

And that would make my weight 115-125 pounds.  And for a brief few weeks I got down to a 125 pounds.  and I looked TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.  My "ideal" weight is 130-135, which I'm ok with.

But, thanks for sharing!
