OT - AT&T Cell Help Needed

I am addding a line for Caleb tomorrow and I need recommendations on texting phones.  I know he wants a full keyboard.  I am also thinking of upgrading...maybe a Samsung Impression, iPhone 3 or iPhone4.  I am thinking of adding a data plan.  Come on gang, give me your input & opinions on plans & phones.  I need it.

How old is Caleb? I have an iphone 3 and LOVE IT!! Of course I recently did an update on the phone and lost EVERYTHING!! I am still trying to recover what I lost. If you get a smartphone you must get a data plan. I have my doubts on the iphone 4 especially with all the problems lately, but hopefully they will be worked out. The iphone 3 is $99, where the iphone 4 is $500, so it is up to  you what kind of money you want to spend. I think the iphone 3 is perfectly acceptable especially for a kid who might be a little rough with it. I would also recommend a screen protector and case!

Thanks Beth.  I got him the Samsung Impression.  It is not a smart phone but has a slider full keyboard, which is what he wanted.  I gave Tim my old cell and I got one too.  Next year I will give Tim mine and get an iPhone 4.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iphone 3gs.  My husband just got the iphone 4, very nice...but it seems a bit more delicate...not sure if that is a problem w/ caleb.  The hype with the signal thing we haven't had an issue any more so than with anything else.  Not sure if the ability to spend $ on apps etc would be an issue?
