I  was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago, after living with it undiagnosed for many years. I specifically choose the DS because of how it would affect the insulin resistance that accompanies PCOS. I have to say that all of the problems associated with PCOS have disappeared. Even, my tag moles have even been reabsorbed into my body. If you are unfamiliar with the DS, please look into it. Here are a couple of really good resources for you:

DS board on OH.com --go there and post about PCOS to get more responses/experiences
duodenalswitch.com
dsfacts.com

The last two sites also list doctors who actually perform the duodenal switch.

I am having the DS in two days for these reasons as well.  My endocrinologist told me the same thing, "you CAN eat 1000 calories a day and exercise six days a week for 2 hours a day and take this handful of pills that we'll have to twea****il we find the right levels and then MAYBE you'll lose weight - or you can have WLS"

I started researching and decided on the VSG because I didn't like the idea of a lapband and didn't see great numbers with it, and the RNY never sounded right for me.  Then I found the DS and read about the correction of insulin resistance with the 'switch' part of the procedure AND the built in metabolic component......I've was diagnosed at 14 and have been waiting 23 years to fix my PCOS and now I've found it!

Several DSers have had healthy babies.  The only thing you MUST be careful of is you have to wait at least 1 year to 18 months before getting pregnant and you'll be incredibly fertile.  You're burning ketones and that can cause damage to the baby that might not show up until years later.

Good luck in your journey!

You know, I had the DS for that very reason, in order to have children. I  must say that in doing all the research I discovered that the insulin resistance *syndrome x* was the basis for a lot of my issues. I had initially thought about weightloss surgery some years back and thought I would get an RNY or even the band, but I didn't realize that I'd have (for me personally) longer term success 98% cure rate  of diabetes with the duodenal switch. Have you thought about that that surgery as a possibility? I have to admit that the hairs grow much less and I'm only two months out. I don't have the cystic acne along the jawline like I had before the surgery. I don't get the boils in places that I don't even want to mention like I did before the surgery. And the best part.. with years of irregular periods (going 9-12 months at a clip without a period) the day after my surgery my cycle corrected itself and it's coming  like clockwork. I'm fertile the same time each month, and I'm just two months out of surgery! Something to think about, Darling.  Either way the choice is yours. Topic: RE: PCOS before and after weight loss surgery
I always had the symptoms even before surgery just no one ever diagnosed me. Not until after the surgery. Before surgery I had whiskers under chin and irregular periods but never really had problems with fertility. I have 3 kids and they just happend. After surgery I started to develop more and more PCOS symptoms told my Gyn and he prescribed spiro, metformin, bcp's. Lately my periods been really crazy even with bc. So your lucky cause your symptoms have gone away with the weight loss. I wish mine would.....

Sherry,

I'm shocked that they went ahead and scheduled your surgery without the approval.  That was my biggest "waiting" hurdle .... my surgeon would not give me a surgery date until after approval came.

Stilll "rooting" for ya girlfriend!!

I would call your insurance company directly to check on the status of your approval.  Good luck!  My PCOS wasn't counted as a comorbid condition when I had surgery.  I'm not sure about now.  Anyway treatment of PCOS is typically with Metformin (if your also insulin resistant) or birth control pills to help regulate hormone production...that's about it.  Maybe since they're not 100% sure you have PCOS they don't want to treat yet?  Anyway...good luck with your RNY!  Don't forget to take pre op pictures & measurements!

Try the nair for sensitive skin. I did with no problem. I had the same red irritation with the other products.

Topic: RE: I feel great and I'm doing everything the natural way! :)

I love meat and I love bread. Haha, I love basically everything that isn't good for the body honestly!

I've always been the one to cheat on diets because I just couldn't pass up the good food.

The transition into strictly raw, healthy food is definitely a hard one. I have kept a few of my basic habits of normal eating. For lunch today I slipped in some chicken and I had a piece of toast for breakfast yesterday. I, too, would have a very hard time staying away from these all together, so I'm taking it in slow steps.

I've found though that when you get pumped up and ready to do it, those things, at least for me, haven't been a priority like they previously were. So, eat your meats and your bread from the start and just slowly take down how much of it you consume.

Either way, I wouldn't beat yourself up about it if you do have such foods. As long as you're giving yourself your fruits and veggies, you'll still be making progress with what you were eating before.

Ha, that's what I keep telling myself. "Hey, I may have slipped with that piece of food, but I was eating McDonalds three weeks ago. Still doing better than that!"

---

As for fruits, we should be careful with our fruit consumption... make sure we definitely level it out with our veggies since fruits are often high in sugar. Diabetics should typically avoid Watermelon, Dates, Bananas, Grapes and Oranges.

However, those are all very important fruits that I love. For this, I eat those in moderation. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that those fruits... even if you're eating a lot of them... won't be any worse that the bowl of ice cream, the candy and cakes.

Speaking of which, I've been eating so much fruit lately... that I haven't wanted the bowls of ice cream, the candies or the cakes.

So, my suggestion is just to get whatever fruits you like. Switching to the foods is hard when we're used to putting so much crap into our bodies. So, do whatever makes the process easier for you.

---

Also, I'm rambling, I apologize. Haha, but before I forget... I would suggest getting fresh lemons to squeeze into your tea... or what I use is honey. Whether you decide to use organic honey or regular, that's completely up to you. However, the tea isn't the greatest. You will adapt to it, definitely. However, the first and second day... I wasn't feeling it and was second guessing my decision to try it. Keep with it! It's wonderful!

Topic: I was told I possible have pcos..
I was told that I possible have pcos by my gynecologist and an endocrinologist but I was not put on any medication I have the symptoms especially the lose of my period. I am now in the process of having RYN and I was wondering when you have you have pcos is it difficult to get your approval from the insurance company I have Affinity Health Plan and I am scheduled for surgery on July, 20 2009 and I go for my pre-op on July 14 but I have not received my approval from Affinity so I was getting worried. I have faith that I will be approved I just really do not like the waiting game.
So if anyone can help me and give me an answer I would greatly appreciate it.
