Topic: Opinions about WLS &PCOS
Hi girls,

I'm new to the board and I'm considering WLS. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago. I have irregular periods and when I do get a period I bleed for about 10-14 days heavily. I'm 5'3" 242lbs, and I've tried everything to lose the weight. The Metformin doesn't really help much and  a major concern for me is being able to have children when I'm ready.  I'm gonna meet with an Endocrinologist to discuss options, but I wanted to know some of your opinions as well considering that a lot of you guys have had WLS. Can you offer me any advice. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

This often happens because of the blood thinners that they give you during surgery, it causes your period to come, and because we are so irregular our lining is thick and takes a while to shed fully. If you call your OB/GYN they can give you something that will help slow it down and stop it.

If I remember correctly, the dark ring is a symptom of insulin resistance. I have it as well.... and it started to clear up quite a bit when I began taking metformin to help the insulin problems.

Skin tags are something entirely different.... you can read about them here:

They're really not a big deal at all.... I've had a couple removed off the back of my neck, and it was virtually painless. :)

Topic: NEED YOUR HELP "SKIN TAGS"

Hey, I need your help. I have just recently heard of this Skin Tags but I have no idea as to what it is. I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 16 and had firbroid surgery 20005, I was later diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. When I asked my OBGYN about this dark ring like around my neck he reported that it's because of my diabetes. Will someon please explain this to me. I'm starting to get a worried as I just had Lapband a week ago.

NEED HELP!!!!!! Someone please explain to me as to what Skin Tags are? I was diagnosed at the age of 16 with PCOS and i have not heard of this. Year 2005 i had firbroid surgery and was placed on Metformin as I was later diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. This really concerns me. I have had a black mark on my neck as if I did not wash my neck good but my OBGYN reported that it's because I'm diabetic. Please whatever information you can give me will be very much appreciated.

Hey hun!  Has your doc checked your fasting insulin since you've had surgery?  I'd check that as well as your fasting glucose before starting back on the Metformin as it lowers glucose and increases inslulin sensitivity.  Last thing we need is you DFOing (Done Fell Out) because your blood sugars have bottomed out from taking the Met.  Remember too that estrogen is stored in fat, and now that you're rapidly shrinking those fat cells that estrogen is being released which can cause funky cycles, increased PMS...stuff like that.  My bet is that your funky cycles & such are from the added estrogen in your system.  Give it a little bit of time and I bet you'll even out again once your weight loss starts to even out.

See you on SC...  ((hugs))

Topic: RE: Pregnancy After WLS?
I too had RNY surgery almost 5 years ago.  I also have PCOS.  I had tried for 8 years prior to my surgery to get pregnant with no luck.  I was found to be clomid resistant & I responded poorly even with injectables.  I had just about given up on ever being a mom.

At 12 months post op & at goal of 140 lbs I went off of the birth control patch (which sucks BTW) and found that for the first time in my life my PCOS was non symptomatic and that I was not only having regular periods, but I was OVULATING!  WOOHOO!!  I had to finish some medication (not PCOS or WLS related) and was clear to ttc at 16 months post op.  I charted my temps, timed doing the deed with ovulation and boom.  I was pregnant the 1st month trying!  I had a healthy pregnancy & baby in 7/06.  Then I had an IUD inserted (love it!) and kept that as my form of birth control until 1/08 when I had it removed.  Once I started my next natural period we tried again and boom...pregnant a 2nd time!  Not bad for someone who didn't think she'd ever be a mom huh?  Anyway I had another healthy baby in December and I'm just thrilled that I'm finally a mom.

Like the previous poster said about loosing the weight again....I found that it was not as easy as I'd hoped it would be following the birth of my first daughter, but the weight did come off and by about 6m old the weight was mostly gone (aside from about 5-8lb.  This time at almost 5 years post op it's a LOT harder to get the weight off.  I still have nearly 20lb to loose to get back to my pre pregnancy weight and 25lb to get back to goal.

But I do have to say that even though I'm holding on to about 20-25lbs they are soooo worth the 2 beautiful girls I have now.

Good luck!

Kristy
