Topic: RE: Lap Band and PCOS Question
I have a very severe form of PCOS and am doing very well with my band. I had my surgery on 12/11/08 and have since lost 40 pounds. I haven't even needed a fill yet. I think the issue with PCOS and weight gain is the carbs and how we crave them and our bodies hold onto them. I was a carb-aholic and now with my band i barely eat any carbs. My body struggles to hold on to the weight and i'll hit a plateau but eventually it drops with a big weight loss. I love my band and would recommend it to anyone with PCOS or without it. I havn't found that it makes a diffrence at all. Hope this helps!
Topic: RE: PCOS symptoms reversed after WLS?
Like some of the other posters, I did start having regular periods post op, but the hair actually seems to be a bit worse.
As an FYI, though, my WLS doc took me off of metformin (glucophage) after my surgery & said that I would no longer need it. It sounded right b/c after all I was having regular periods. My new doctor (primary care) is very educated on PCOS and bariatrics--he immediately put me back on metformin. Per this new doc, even with the improved symptoms and WLS, those with true PCOS and insulin resistance still have a much higher chance of developing Type 2 Diab. in the future, and metformin can stave that off. This doc says I should be on Metformin for life.
Obviously there are differing medical opinions, but just thought I'd pass along this info for whatever it is worth.

Topic: Lap Band and PCOS Question
Hi
I have PCOS and I am currently in the beggining stages of considering getting the Lap Band Surgery (I'll call it the research stage) and I am concerned that becasue of the nature of PCOS (meaning that it's partly a metabolic syndrome) that losing weight with the band won't produce a big weight loss. I am TOO afraid of the RnY. Has anyone with PCOS had good consistent weight loss with the Lap Band?

My specialist put me on Yasmin (Ocella) years ago, because I have PCOS. I really liked that one.

What was you your prefered method of birth control following surgery?
Don't get me wrong DH and I want babies, and prior to our surgery approvals had been trying over 5 1/2 years, but now we have to wait another 12-18 months, but avoiding sex is out of the question, as is condoms . . . so any recommendations?

For the Whey and Soy I have been going to GNC. I get the GNC Pro Performance Whey Protein Complex and the GNC Pro Performance Soy Protein 95. For the mint tea, I get Bigelow Mint Medley, and you can pretty much get it at any grocery store. I hope this helps you.
