Topic: RE: which WLS is best for PCOS?
I had my surgery Jan. 9, 2009 and had my period by Jan. 18, 2009 so it wasn't that bad. Glad that I was able to have a period finally on my own. I'm sure yours is on it's way.

I went back and forth from Lap Band to RNY for months. After talking with several doctors and the surgeon who performed my surgery, I was informed that Lap Band would not work as effectively for me due to the insuline resistance. We need the malabsorption to better the insuline resistance.
I had RNY on Jan. 12th. I have yet to have a period, but I am happy with my decision.

Praying for a healthy and thinner 2009.
16 pounds of this lost before surgery
Topic: I finally have the answers to a lifetime of questions
I am a nearly 60 year old women and I have just recently realized what has been wrong with me all my life. I have PCOS, and I have never been told by a doctor that I had it. I was married at 18 and I wanted a child right from the start and I was not able to conceive. My periods were very irregular so I went to a doctor. I only got into the doorway and he informed me the reason that I could not get pregnant was that I was too fat. I tried so many times to lose weight and I would lose some, but it always came back and more. For many years I went to different doctors and they would always say it was because I was overweight. I was on clomed and birth control pills to regulate my periods, but I still could not get pregnant. I went through so many tests, but no doctor every gave me a reason other than I was too fat. I was around 230 lbs, I even had the stomach st aping operation in 1983, It did not work either. I was never able to have a child of my own but I did adopt my son in 1988. He is the pride of my life, and I can not imagine that I could love him any more than I do, but there is a part of me that feels cheated.......I had all the symptoms and I still have the excess hair growth on my chin and upper lip. I have to shave it everyday. I gave up on pulling it out and Nair burns my face. I now am at 250 lbs and I am going to have bypass surgery soon, I have high BP, severe arthritis in my knees and my doctor says I am pre-diabetic. I have just learned that my 27 yr. old niece also has PCOS and she is having problems getting pregnant, and I feel so much distress for her, but a lot of you have said that you do have children, so that gives me hope.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine your pain.
You make a very good point. I always feel kinda like the red-headed stepchild with this PCOS stuff. Most doctors can treat the symptoms individually but so few people really know what to do with it. With more and more research, hopefully we can all get the care that we need.
thanks for sharing your story with us.

Topic: RE: PCOS & Tri-Care Insurance Approval
Aloha! My name is Mercedes I talked to my PCP and he gave me a referral to both a rhumey and a bariatric sugeon (I have Lupus... not a co-morb). He said that I had a 1% chance of getting approved by TRICARE. I left the office feeling defeated.
My current BMI is a 37.1, not enough for my insurance to approve. I'm SO fustrated b/c I know that WLS can help me on so many levels. I have irregular periods, depression, arthritis, and chronic lower back pain. Still not enough.
Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get WLS w/o having to gain MORE weight?!!!

I was diagnosed MANY years ago with PCOS. Long story sort of short: My Daughter was also diagnosed at age 13. She had minor surgery on her legs (healthy athletic 16 year old) and had a pulmonary embolus (blood clot) 2 weeks later that took her from us.
I went to an endocrinologist about 6 months after her death because we wanted to try for a baby ( Kendal had also been a fertility baby). Anyway, this guy had done ALOT of research and specialized in PCOS. There are studies out there that show (research done in the last 10-15 years) there are abou 14 clotting disorders related to PCOS.
Bottom line, Please make sure that your Drs. are aware of this prior to ANY type of surgery so that precautions can be taken and you can be watched more closely. I actually tested negative for these clotting disorders, but we will never know if Kendal did or not.
JUST FYI. Some do not believe this research, it is up to you.

I was diagnosed 25 years ago with PCOS only they called it Stein Leventhol Syndrome back then. Mine is a fairly severe case. Anyway, I was banded in Feb of last year, had my first cycle in April and have had one every 4-5 weeks since then. I am down over 70 pounds with about 30 to go and am very happy with my results. No more blood pressure meds, no more Metfomin, no more cholestrol problems (now 150) and my triglycerides are at 55!
I have not had regular TOMs EVER in my life without the use of hormones of some kind. So let it be your decision. Either surgery, if you work it the way it is intended, can get the job done!
LapBand was the best decision I ever made, FOR ME!

I had RNY and am out 10 mths, 2 periods a month and cramps are horrible. Didnt help anything, but I have lost 110 lbs which is GREAT! I usually just spend the first day of my period in a hot bathtub.
Topic: RE: Dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and This Hair
I have had problems since I was 12 with PCOS and hair under my chin and on my lip. I used to use a bleach, but that discolored my skin and looked funny. What I have been using for over 10 years now is Nair, Cream for Face. It works wonderfully! I have sensitive skin, but this does not bother it. I will say that the heavier I got, the thicker my hair got. The Nair Cream says to keep the cream on for no longer than 10 minutes, but I keep mine on for 20 minutes. It gets all the thick hairs and leaves your face so soft and hair free! I don't want to do the pills, because it can mess with other medications, plus I just don't like taking drugs if I can help it. Hope you try it! I think you will like it!

soul cysters has a lot of great information if you havn't heard of the website...
You need to control your androgen levels. I lost lots and lots of weight and it hasn't helped with my hair at all. Recently I have begun flutamide, which is a very hardcore anti-androgen. I have only been on it 6 months, and while I have not noticed any hair regrowth, it has helped my hirsuitism immensely.
For some people treating excess androgens with spirolactone is enough. Your doctor will most likely insist you try this before a stronger medication. Personally I was allergic to spiro. I also tried many other medications before my doctor agreed to give me flutamide. It's important to start treating this now because some people say that hair follicles that are dormant for more than 3 years are permanently dead.

you have to treat excess androgens from the inside and the outside. The first thing you can do now is get yourself something that removes the DHT from your scalp, there are dandruff shampoos that do this and for a bit of extra money, nioxin is great.
Good luck.
