Topic: Survived Surgery ;-)
Heh. Most everything went well. My potassium was low, so they delayed my surgery by one day. Doc put in a central line so they could run some potassium into me fairly quickly. I don't recommend having this done while awake.
I spent a day and a half on a vent after the surgery in ICU. They didn't have a room on the floor, so I stayed in ICU a few days. I passed my leak test and had the NG removed. Out came the JP drain, hospital food was tried and rejected.
I was discharged on my 6th Post-Op day, Friday. We spent the night in the local motel, then drove from Omaha to Kansas City and spent the night. The next day we drove on home to St. Louis.
I was feeling very good. Monday I did too much, so I've been paying for it pain-wise for several days. I'm wearing an abdominal binder to keep me in check.
All in all, not a bad experience for me. There weren't any residents or interns, but there were student nurses everywhere. I didn't mind them practicing on me at all. I remember what it was like.
Hubby is a bit worse for wear, though.
Nah, he did very well and I'd have been lost without him.

Congratulations Kathy. I remember when I got my acceptance letter...it was awesome.
I wish you the best of luck with the program and with Micro..dont worry, its not too bad
My husband is trying to get into the Nursing program at our college (Arkansas State University). Its very competitive as well...as most are. So many applicants, so few seats. They need to open up more classes. We are hoping he gets accepted this Fall. He has all of his basics over and done with and has a 4.0 average right now...so he shouldnt have any problem this time around..
*crosses fingers*

Topic: Hello from Austin, Texas
My name is Caryl and I've been an RN 5 1/2 years. I've been overweight all my life (since I was 7 yo anyway). I had a successful weight loss while in nursing school. I lost 80 lbs but gained all and more back after being hit by a car and having a big knee surgery. I'm now considering RNY.
Is there anyone else out there that works for the Seton network? Our insurance excludes bariatric surgery, though there seems like there might be wiggle room in the wording with assistance of an attorney. It is SO hypocritical, as Seton is currently trying to cash in on the bariatric surgery business, promoting itself as a bariatric surgery center. I heard a rumor that a change might be coming, but don't know when. Anyone else dealing with this?

How did you find out what physician to go to for your panni? Did you have to "shop" around? When did you go? What weight should I be at? I have 37 pounds to go to get to my goal and am 10 months out (down 128 can you believe it?). My internal medicine doc says I probably have about 15 pounds of skin. I carried most of my weight there, and boy is what is left over -UGLY. Plus, major back and hip aches because my whole weight is pitched forward since there is not much left to counter balance the hanging ab. I have Medical Mutual. They paid for the RNY, but is there anywhere I can look to see if they pay for the ab surgery? Thanks for any help and info! Have a great day!

Hi Lisa,
I hope that you are able to re-obtain your goal of nursing. Nursing is hard work but so rewarding--I'm sure you miss it!! Have you been approved for RNY? What steps are you currently taking? I wish you all the best in your search for health and fitness!
Keep your chin up!
Best wishes!
Meg

Hello Fellow Nurses,
I am a Nurse Manager of a OB Unit. We have approximately 800 deliveries a year and have a level 1 nursery. My staff is fantastic and I work with a great group of physicians. I have lost 117 pounds and feel better than I have in years. Good luck where ever you are on your weight loss journey.
