I was told to have 81 g of protein. Will that ever change. I'm almost 2 years out. Why also do we have to have as much protein as before. Doesn't our body work with less?

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Are you saying that we ALWAYS have to do these protein drinks ? I've just now found one I can even tolerate and will only be able to get 45 grams in today of the drink. I'm hoping to build up to 75 by the end of the weak. TWO YEARS and you STILL have to do the protein supplements? I was not told that beforehand. Would it have changed my mind about the surgery? nah... No regrets here. Just wish those drinks tasted like hmmm... well, NOTHING would be good. lol Truly flavorless protein drink would be SUCH a blessing to me. I wish I could give you my knowledge about the amt to have 2 years post op, but as you know my the statement above, I have absolutely no knowledge about that. I hope you find that half the amt will suffice. I REALLY hope you find that out. Gale

I love the AchievOne and would not want to stop drinking them. They are yummy. I would rather give up on some other protein. I drink this coffee drink every morning. Hope you find what suits you.

First of all, Loretta, where do you get that AchievOne? And... does it have caffeine in it? I just saw my surgeon and the nurses last Friday. I was 5 1/2 wks out. I was told to keep doing the protein drinks because I could not get enough protein from foods alone. I was told to get 80 grams of protein from the supplements alone. I started just last night keeping up with my nutrition on Fitday.com. I have found the supplement that I can drink though. It's that ProStat wild cherry. My sweet, SWEET husband made me 1/2 galon of Crystal Light Pink Lemonade this morning before he went to work, while I slept no less, to mix this concentrate in. THEN tonight he brought home some s.f. cherry KoolAid and made some of that and brought me that with the ProStat in it. I didn't even know he was fixin' it. It just tasted like really strong cherry KoolAid. I LIKED IT! I would LOVE to try the Achieve One though. I do so enjoy my one cup of decaf in the mornings. That's all I can drink these days as it takes about 30 minutes just to get one cup drank. Gale

I found it from the ads on here. http://store.bariatriceating.com/achievone.html It's not thick and it is easy to drink.

Thanks Loretta, I'm definitely going to check it out. The only drinks I LIKED before surgery were my coffee, an occasional cup of cocoa and water. I don't like KoolAid, Crystal Light, Tea, Sodas or anything else so you can see how any of the Protein drinks have been a problem for me. Oh... I LOVED Mocha decaf when I lived in WA back in 2000. It was quite fattening though. And I LOVE Hazelnut CoffeeMate in my coffee (before surgery, that is). I appreciate you taking the time to post the site for me. Gale

My surgeon and NUT both said to not rely on protein shakes... they said after the first 6 weeks I needed to "ween" myself off the shakes. I am one month out today and am down to drinking 1 shake a day. Once I get off the soft foods diet I will no longer need to drink the shakes. They did say it was ok now and then to drink the shake but try to not make it part of your daily routine. I am getting 40+ grams protein from food and 30 from the shake for a total of 70 currently

Seems every surgeon/nut has a different opinion on this. From the research Ive done online there is a formula based on your weight to figure out how much protein you need - not sure how it works with somebody who had WLS. Mine said to get between 60-70 a day.

I am wondering where you came up with 81g of protein per day??? Seems an odd number ... Anyway, I was reading in Prevention magazine that women need about 45g of protein a day (Men need 55g), but keep in mind that we malabsorb protein. My NUT recommended 60g of protein per day. If you can get that amount from food, you don't have to supplement. Some people consume huge amounts of protein (120g or more per day), but keep in mind that excess protein can interfere with the absorption of calcium, can lead to kidney damage and gout. 81g of protein seems okay ... It certainly won't hurt you. Annette
