I NEED a diet coke!

I have never been big on soda.  Pre-surgery I drank maybe one diet coke a day and the rest of the day was water.  For the past couple of days, my mouth has been so dry and just craving a diet coke!  I am two weeks out.  Will I ever be able to drink this again?  Is there a way to de-carbonate it?

To decarbonate it you can just let it sit out until it is flat. That being said.  You don't need a diet coke, you want one. I would try to work on that to ensure that you stay successful and do what is right for your body. Good luck.  :-)

As a Diet Coke addict I can sympathize with you.
But---RESIST THE URGE!!
You can do it.
I know how hard it is. I went COLD TURKEY the day before surgery.
Focuse on water, water, water and more water.

Yes you will be able to have soda again. BUT you may find that you don't like it at that point.
All that said
I waited a full 12 weeks before I even DARED have carbonation.
Even then, I had it ice cold, poured over LOTS of ice and then stirred like mad with the straw. I have my ONE a day--and the rest of the day is water or Crystal Lite.

I am pre surgery but from what I understand carbonation is not good for pouches.   I love diet Coke.  I have decided to prepare for this surgery to stop drinking it, one of the hardest behaviors to get over for me will be this. I also have high bp and the caffeine is bad for that.  I haven't had a drop since Monday.  I've been downing water and Cyrstal Light alternatively.  I felt awful at first, not alert.  This morning I seem to be better. I know I'll probably want some diet coke at some point, and my plan is to remember why I'm doing all this.   I just decided I would rather be healthy and normal than guzzle a soda.

Same here.  I am pre-surgery as well and also a diet coke fan.  I read also that carbonation is not good for pouches.  I'm a newbie and I think I will have to scale back after I have my appointment with the surgeon in order to prepare for post-op.   Hang in there. coco

Not a NEED ... a WANT.  You NEED liquids ... but certainly not carbonation.  Do I understand the desire?  YES.  I'm 3 months postop and about 2 weeks ago, I could have guzzled a soda.  Well, I could have attempted ... it would not have been pretty had I decided to guzzle it.  Talk about foamies, I cannot even imagine the consequences.  I walked away from it and decided to sip on water instead, and I survived just nicely as the craving passed.  That's all it was.  My surgeon/NUT say NO carbonation -- and they don't give me a time that I can ever return to carbonation, they just say NO carbonation.  If I had to drink a flat soda just to drink a soda, I would just as soon drink something uncarbonated to begin with ... so I have accepted the fact that it's bad for me and not going to be a part of my life ever again.  I can live with that.

Speaking as a former diet coke ADDICT.... I actually went through caffeine withdrawal after my surgery and had a terrible headache. I drank too much diet coke for too long.  After surgery... maybe around 5 weeks post-op, I sipped a diet coke out of curiosity --- it tasted so awful that I spit it out and never opened another one. You'll be surprised if you try it. You might actually think it is NASTY!  I crave really cold water now, and aside from crystal light, that's all I drink now.  My body is really happy with the caffeine and without the aspartame!  I'm also saving a lot of money...as diet coke is not cheap anymore.  Good luck with it!   Hugs, Elaine

It's tough if you're a diet coke addict like I was!  I did not have a soda of any type for just over one year after my Gastric Bypass!  I'm over 3 years out now, and what I do is....I don't allow myself to have a diet coke until after I get my gallon of wate in every day!  It was hard at first to handle the carbonation, but it gets easier....so yes, you can drink it again, but you're best bet is to wait as long as you can after surgery!   Debby

I find that some of the things we liked pre op are now just too sweet to the taste for me. Diet soda among them. I have also noticed that since surgery anything with aspartame tastes like metal! Yuck!

You need to get past the NEED & WANT of things.  My surgeon dosen't prohibit caffeine or carbonation, you'll need to check with yours.  Try to find a non-carbonated & caffeine free drink to replace those diet cokes.  They have no nutritional value and are empty.
