Bipolar meds before surgery
Hi Tamara,
If you are on medication for bipolar disorder, you should talk to either your primary care provider (your family doctor) or the physician who diagnosed you and prescribed the meds. Also, is there some reason why you feel you must stop taking the meds after surgery? Please talk to your doctor about this as soon as you can, and be aware that many people continue taking their prescriptions after surgery.

Hi, Tamara! CONGRATS on getting your surgery date!!! Talk to the doc who prescribed them for you...for the best advice. You shouldn't have to go off them!!! I'm on antidepressants and nothing was said about getting off them. I will have to crush them or open the capsules for the first week or two after surg, so they are easier to swallow but, please, continue to take your meds. You know how important it is! Take care, Jean
I've been on anti-depressants for 10 years and didn't have to go off of them. I missed 1 dose my first night in the hospital because they didn't allow me to swallow anything. I was back on my schedule the 2nd night. I would talk with your surgeon & psychologist to make sure there all on the same page.

Hi Tamara,
I took my bipolar meds the day before and the day after, ever since. My pchyo doc even perscribed from a pill to a liquid (I take depakote) so that I could better absorb my medication. My surgeon had no problem with me taking my regular meds the day after surgery to include my birth control pills, thyroid medication and my bipolar meds.
Just ask your doctors.....
Dawn
