Dumping syndrome ... Maybe a stupid question

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not out to sabotage myself and consume a lot of sugar. I'm working hard to do all the "right" things and take care of myself. However, I noticed that I haven't ever felt what has been decribed as dumping. For example, if I have milk ... some people say that they dump on the lactose in milk ... not me.

I guess I'm wondering if this intolerance to sugar is something that develops over time, or is it something you have right away ... I didn't think you'd have it right away because people can use Ensure or Boost ... But if it develops later, when should I expect it?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Barb

I haven't experienced it yet either...but I'm also not on solid foods yet. There has been a part of me that has been tempted to try something teeny to see if I do dump...I want to control where I am if/when it happens (like being at home vs. work or out with my son). I'm sure I'll have opportunity to find out as I start on solids, but I've had no issues with milk or of the other liquids I've tried yet. I am hoping that I am someone who dumps because I want that as a deterrent...but if it doesn't happen for me, well, so be it.

It seems like everyone is different. I have dumped on a couple of T's of cornbread stuffing at Thanksgiving, a Starbuck's mess-up of non-SF syrup/whipped cream, and eating more than 1/2 a Power Crunch Bar... others same surgery could eat all those things and be fine. I might even be able to eat them again and have no ill effects. It's strange. If you are interested here's a great article on dumping.

Not everyone dumps, you'd only dump on the lactose if your lactose intolerant.  I get very sick from lactose, diarreha & vomitting.  I now resort to Lactaid or Soy Milk.  Like you said "Don't test the waters with sugar".  Just keep following your surgeons plan & you'll know what & what you can't tolerate over time.

I don't dump on dairy products (I don't drink milk but do cottage cheese, cheese etc). I dump on sugar and usually it's hidden like teriyaki chicken or in BBQ sauce. The last time was on the Olive Garden "no sugar added" chocolate cake..obviously NOT sugar free, just no sugar added. My advise is to not try to find what makes you dump, but to steer far away from anything with sugar or high fat that might make you dump. If you never have problems with dumping from anything, then it gets really easy to eat those things that got you where you were when you started checking into WLS!  If I found out that I could tolerate candy and ice cream and donuts and cake and.....then I would quickly be back where I started. So I just don't go there!!

Not everyone dumps.  Those that do, not everyone dumps on sugar.  Some dump on sugar, some dump on fat, and some dump only if they eat sugar & fat at the same time.  Let's make this even more confusing.  Some can eat sugar just fine one day and dump the next.  I don't dump.  I thought I was a fat dumper but it was actually my gallbladder.  I was lactose intolerant for a few months early out.  But, that cleared up on it's own.

I dumped on a Zone shake that was pre-mixed in a bottle...I took it camping because I was on a liquid diet and it made me so sick...that was my first dumping experience.
