Side effects after drinking protein drinks???

Hello everyone!  I am on my pre-op liquid diet for 2 weeks.  Today is day 4 and surgery is in 10 days, on the 21st!  Yay!  I'm almost there! I've just been noticing these past 4 days that every time I have a protein drink (it doesn't matter what brand or flavor- it happens every time), my cheeks get very flushed and my face feels like it is burning up.  Everywhere else in my body, my temperature is normal to chilly, but not my face!  Also, I've had a pretty bad taste in my mouth and also developed some type of filmy white substance on the back part of my tongue.  Any thoughts on this?   I'm curious!  Did any of you have any side effects like this? Thanks, Apryl

it sounds like you might be having an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients.... this could be a vitamin.... niacin does this to me.... or the type of protein..... if everything you drink is whey or milk based, try using a soy based protein drink (or vice versa) and see if you get the same type of reaction

Hmm...I've never really had any food allergies before, but that makes sense.  I am consuming a lot more protein than I ordinarily would have.  I know both of my protein powders are whey protein, but I'm not sure about the drinks.  I'll have to double check them.  So far I've tried isopure, atkins protein shakes, and EAS AdvantEDGE carb control protein shakes.  I have the same reaction to all of them.   Thank you!

Hmmm... could be a mix of things.  You may be allergic to the protein.  There are numerous kinds of protein so experiment.  I remember getting headaches frequently when I tried protein shakes.  Some just didn't work with my body.  And as a new post-op, during the liquids phase, my tongue was white-ish and filmy for a few days.  Talk about a bad aftertaste!  But it's all since gone away. Good luck!  You'll be celebrating your surgery on my 3 mos surgiversary!  I'll save a seat for ya over here on the skinny side! Heather

Hi Heather!  Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorite verses!  Happy almost 3 month surgiversary!  I can't wait to join you on the skinny side!  I'm glad to know that someone else also had the whitish filmy tongue and bad taste in their mouth.  I was trying to use the symptom checker on web md, but I didn't think I had thrush (and that was what it kept coming up with).  I just figured it was due to changes in my diet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Call your surgeon's office to ask about the reaction.  They would be the experts on this and might have suggestions on what else to try. As for the white yucky stuff on your tongue and bad taste -- it's probably ketosis.  When you are on a high-protein diet your body goes into ketosis and is burning fat for energy.  Some of the side effects is bad breath and that yucky stuff on your tongue.  Try a tongue scraper and medicated mouth wash (like Listerine).  Pam

So far, every kind I've tried has caused the same reaction afterwards.  I've tried the Body Fortress Whey Protein powder mixed with both water and skim milk (at different times).  I've tried the EAS Protein Drinks.  I've tried the Atkins Advantage protein shakes.  I've tried the Isopure protein drinks.  Each time, for about an hour and a half to two hours after drinking them, my face is flushed (really red- it looks like I have on way too much blush!) and really hot.  My fingers are usually freezing and the rest of me is at a normal temperature.  I've never had that reaction with anything until I started drinking so many protein shakes.  I do have a doctor's appointment this morning for my complete history and physical that is required before surgery on the 21st, so I plan to ask about it there as well.

I'm wondering if the glycerin in the bars or bottles is an issue? I don't, um, well I'm not as personally familiar with the discount brands. So, I'm not sure which common denominator there is in them vs real protein.

Were those MRP? Meal replacement powders or just protein?
