most walmarts or other grocers carry the Greek yogurts.   Fage or Oikos are the common brands around here.   They taste a bit like sour cream as packaged, but you can add some equal or splenda and/or some sugar free fruit syrups for additional taste and then they almost taste like a dessert, but without of the carbs or sugars.   These slide down very easily and move on through your pouch very quickly compared to other proteins.  Give em a try.  They really helped me.  I did away with protein drinks really quickly 'cause I hated the taste.

My surgeon STRESSED the use of protein shakes. This is true especially during the first few months of major wt loss. Your body will suffer muscle mass loss if you body is not getting enough protein. You really have to watch your daily diet to maintain the 75 grams or so daily you are recommened.  I'm over 2 years out and I still take about 3-4 protein shakes per week. I don't count protein too closely, just estimate. I take the shakes to make sure my protein intake is not deficien****ch your labs, and make sure your vitamin D levels are above 70. Levels below that lead to many health issues. I'm aware of these issues as I've battled vitamin D levels since surgery. My D levels at 2 years were only 33, just barely above the nomral limits of 30-100.  I'm now taking 5000 IU D supplements, so my labs next time will have levels above 70. DAVE

Each and every DR is different and I think the most important thing is you follow the rules they gave you.

You are absolutely right, Jan...it is ok to get opinions here..but ultimately one should listen to their DR and/or Nut...because they are the ones with the degrees...The whole protein issue is touchy because some want to bash a DR that says no to protein supplements...but my Dr is the same way and has been doing this a long time with great results...We all just need to trust the Dr we chose. :)

Hi Christie!!!
My DOctor says Absolutly NO Shakes, No Bars, Nothing powdered.. !!!
I have leanred that Skilm Milk has 9 G protien per Cup!!!
Greek Yogert has about 20 G per Cup.. make sure you get the Fat Free veriety!
Greek Yogert has a Tangy Flavor.. and i use it in EVERYTHING i'd use Sour Cream for..
Including my sugar free Cheesecakes.. and it does GREAT!!!!
someone suggested i use it as milk for cerial.. and its actually ok.. just bit TOO tangy for that..(In My Opinion)
there is a basic Guide to how much Meat gives how Much protien for 3 oz.. (about the size of a Deck of Cards) Depending on the Meat..
TOFU is also a Great Choice for Protien..  and Edimome too..
I dont know all of the Grams for these. but they are all HIGH PROTIEN foods..
I hope this helps..

Brightest blessings! one day i'll be a muscle Bear!

Wouldn't it be great if there was a national nutritional bariatric standard. I work in an ICU and one of the things that I have learned is that surgeons are great at surgery, but need medical person (ex.internist) to keep things running smoothly later. Whenever the medical team gets involved in the surgical aspect things get messy and whenever the surgical team gets involved in the medical aspect things get messy too. I know some people won't like what I am about to say but....you have to figure out what will be right for you. You may just need a little wiggle room.

Amanda -

I agree with you.  that's why I don't fret over the fact that I've never seen my surgeon since the day of surgery.  When I follow up at the clinic, I meet with the nurse practitioner who specializes in post-op bariatric care, the nutritionist team, etc.

I just wish I had a nutritionist who had actually had WLS so she'd understand a bit more about what we're going through.  and often I catch her giving advice based on a normal digestive system and I have to question her on it -- then she usually changes her advice because I  called her out on it.

I think it is up to each of us to be educated about our own health and what is best for OUR OWN bodies.  Not every bariatric patient is the same and you can't expect the advice given to one person to work for the next.

I've also heard that the ASBMS has put together a nutrition panel to come up with some "guidelines" for bariatric programs.  Can't wait to see what they come up with.  (Need to figure out when that is suppose to be out... or if it's already out...)
