I know some of you are going to want to laugh at this but please don't tell me cause I'm seriously distraught and in a lot of pain.

My RNY was four days agao.  About 2 today I got the hiccups and I can't make them go away, they are excurciating.  I have always suffered with hiccups, when I as in college I had them for three days and they finallly gave me seizure meds to stop them.  The ones I'm having right now are so violent they are shaking my whole body and the pain is intense.  I tried holding my breath and all I did was hold it until I passed out.  Sugar helped before, but I can't take that now.  Does anyone have any actual techniques that help?

I'm sorry I don't have any answers, but hope they stop soon, I  can only imagine how distressing this is for you, so soon after surgery.

Did you ask your surgeon for help with this.  I wouldn't think this is good for the healing process.

If it's OK with your surgeon - apple cider vinegar - a "shot" or two should do the trick.  Works for me every time.

Good luck!

Lemon juice... I know exactly what you are talking about.. I've also got a cup of water and put a papertowel over it and drank thru the paper towel and that works for me too

Sure fire way for me is to drink from the wrong side of the glass.... really! Lean over the glass so that your chin is over the liquid and sip from the wrong side of the glass. AND call your surgeon, hiccups at this point can be serious!

OK ... this may be the dumbest thing you've every heard ... but it always works for me:

Hold both hands out in front of yourself, like you're holding onto a large glass of water.  But there's NO cup - you're just holding an imaginary cup!

Slowly, bring the imaginary cup up to your lips, watching the imaginary cup the entire time.  Take three slow swallows - actually swallowing nothing (but your saliva).  Don't gulp air - just swallow three times.

Then, again - slowly bring the imaginary cup down from your lips - watching it the entire time.

....   That's it!   ... Waiting ... waiting ....  waiting ...   ??       Any Huccups???

Your diaphram is irritated from the surgery - it was manipulated a lot in the procedure.  Call your doc. There are medicines that can help.

Sam,

Call the office at Duke. They will have someone on call that you can talk to about this.

I'm so sorry to hear of your discomfort.
