Ok, here I go again. So, I get RNY and I have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life everyday. How many vitamins are we talking? I saw an example of 1 person taking 8 calcium pills a day and thats just calcium. So, please tell me how many pills and what types of pills do you take daily?

If you miss one day, it's fine.  However, missing one day tends to missing 2 days.. then a week.. then a month.. and then you end up in deficiency hell.

Trust me, I've had experience -- it's much better to stave off a deficiency than fight to get out of one.

I take 2 citracal petite 3x per day, thiamin 100mg, centrum complete chewable 2 per day, vit b12 1000 mcg sublingual, vit d 2000 units, vitron-c (iron) 1 a day 2 hrs apart from calcium when I remember, the calcium and iron cause constipation whech requires 2 colace 2x/day. Grand total= 16 pills/day.  I hate it, and I usually forget to take the calcium 3x/day. Good luck!

there are these vitamins called Optisource.. and they are made for people with WLS.. my surgeon told me that if i take these i dont have to take anything else with them.. they are chewable.. i take 2 in the morning and 2 at night.      and i really trust my surgeon he was practically one of the people that invinted the surgery.

Optisource are LOUSY.  They mix iron and calcium (bad!) and they have the wrong type of calcium (carbonate rather than citrate.)  Finally, they don't contain sufficient B12 for post-op RNYers.

Optisource vitamins would only be appropriate for people who have had LapBand or VSG (sleeve) surgeries, NOT RNY or DS surgeries.

You're going to have to get used to the idea of taking 15-25 vitamin/supplement pills a day BEFORE your surgery, because you'll be S.O.L. if you don't do so after your WLS.

I would not rely on optisource for my calcium needs. It contains calcium carbonate which has been shown to be absorbed less by rny patients than caclium citrate. I would take calcium citrate in addition to optisource to protect your bones.

my surgeon used to recommend Optisource but even then he had us supplement calcium and b12. Then everyone started turning up anemic. So when you add some iron and some vitamin D it is cheaper and easier to use another multi.

keep an eye on your labs!
