LEXI...I need you!
Ok, so here's the situation:
I have been working out at the gym. I've been mixing it up with the machines and weights and whatnot and have seen pretty good progress. I introduced the rowing machine and that seems to have gotten the losses moving again.
Well the other day it was too friggin cold to go to the gym. So I did some stuff at home (while watching the Biggest Loser no less). I did a bunch of squats, leg lifts, lunges, did some work with weights (rows, chest presses, overhead presses).
So yesterday I was SORE. So my concern is this. When I was doing that stuff every day eventually I was not sore anymore. I'm wondering if I'm falling out of shape in certain respects if I am experiencing such soreness from that workout (which didn't seem that straining to me)? Or maybe it was because I hadn't done it in a while and I did, in fact, manage to "mix it up." Or maybe I'm just thinking about this too much and need to get over myself.
Anyway, I value your opinion (and everyone's really but Lexi is the buff chick so...you know the deal). Does my soreness mean I'm falling out of shape?

One would think that since I claim to be active, I'd know what a nautilus machine is but I"m not so sure. Is that a brand name or a specific kind of machine?
I usually do a combination of the treadmill (jogging 5.5 mph, walking at inclines), the elliptical machine (I do hill interval) and the rowing machine (I just wing it for 20 minutes as fast as I can) and I do the pre-programmed weight circuits (the Y uses the Fit Linxx program).
I do like to "feel the burn" but I was worried that maybe I'm not working these muscles (especially my quads) enough if they responded like that to what I thought was a simple and relatively easy workout.

I do the eliptical m w f and the first week I was feeling a little sore
the following week m w f I did the eliptical and I was fine
BUT
T and TH I did water aerobics
Seriously.. I thought they were going to have to use the net to pull me out, and the next morning I was burning.
Nautilus are those really cool weight machines that gyms have.
the leg lift machine, the bench press machine, the squat machine etc... those usually keep you in the proper range of motion, where as with aerobics... hell, you'd think I was a vegas dancer the way I do my leg kicks underwater
Hence the burn from over stretching.

Ahhh...thank you!
The elliptical does not make me sore at all anymore. I even did 30 minutes on the very highest resistance (100) and nothing. Neither does the rowing machine (surprising since I'm not used to it AND it works a lot of different muscle groups).
Yes, I guess we do use nautilus equipment. My circuit is the following: leg press (I do 240 lbs), chest press (60 lbs), stationary row (80 lbs.), Tricep extension (45 lbs.), Arm Curls (30 lbs...I'm a wimp), Back extension (120 lbs.) and Ab Crunch (80 lbs.). The weight is the level where 8 reps in a set is challenging.

Well there are probably a couple things there - (this is opinion ya) - and Terri could probably tell you better but
I think Tony is right about the range of motion. Especially on the circuits - same stuff over and over. Its why I switch up between ball stuff, weight stuff, band stuff, cable stuff - it all moves things just a little differently.
ALSO - subconciously, you probably worked yourself a little harder in ways because you were at home and you know you were thinking "I need to work out just as good as the gym!" so you didn't feel like a slacker.
I realllly feel that exercises that use your own body for resistance give you the best overall results - unless you're a power lifter (again my opinion) because you feel compelled to overachieve and because you are forced to use your core muscles more, without some special chair or pad or bar to support you while you move.
